... turn you are confronted with another 5-6-7th centaury BC ruin whilst always being under the awe of the Parthenon. After Gryos for lunch we ventured up to the Acropolis and its surrounds. It is a humbling place, standing under 15m of marble that has stood the test of 2500 years. Little bit of retail therapy for me then back to swim and snooze. In Gythion harbour there is a tiny island which is where Helen of Troy and Paris spent their first night after escaping from Sparta. At ...

Breakfast by the harbour then drive north up the east coast, heading for campsite at Gythion. Stop in mountain village of Lagia for coffee and meet a german couple on their bikes, one of which is a recumbent bike! We buy them a cup of coffee while a rain storm passes. They are on a year's sabbatical from their teaching jobs. Started last September, cycled from home via Italy to Crete. Went home for the winter, then flew back to Crete to continue ...
