fond memories

It was a day of memories. Ethiopia seems to be undergoing massive road construction and the majority of them are led by Chinese road crews using local labour. Early in the morning we spotted our first Beijing Jeep, exactly the same kind we used to have when we lived in Urumqi, Xinjiang! We couldn't believe it!! It brought back memories of our beloved Beijing Jeep in Urumqi, the one we did the Taklamakan Rally with! We stopped briefly to talk to one of the Chinese guys who was from Sichuan pro...

IN SEARCH OF THE NILE'S SOURCE

Today the air is cleaner, so it's a good day to backtrack a few hours to Bahir Dar before the final leg back to Addis in a few days. Maybe I'll catch some vistas that I missed on the way in to Gonder. If nothing else maybe my lungs can start recuperating, though I imagine I'll be scraping out black gunk for a while. If I can survive my wife's TB sheets I can survive anything. But the vistas are few even on a clear day, nothing more than a few old stranded Russian tanks to differentiate the ot...

Arriving in Bahar Dar

We leave Addis at 4am and at first Ethiopian roads put Irish roads to shame. Then they become freakishly broken and we crawl along at less than 10mph. The composer of Ethiopian music has a rapist wit. Our car overtakes like he was in NASCAR, and one of the other passengers, Yahul, buys us lunch even though we offer to buy his. The Ghion hotel is far nicer than in Addis and it is clear that all Ethiopian soap is adorned with orgasming farangi (western)women. During the night I ask Greg if he p...

Heading to Bahir Dar

The minibus picked us up around 4am, it was surely too early to start the day but hey we would have the rest of the day to sleep on the minibus anyway so there was nothing to complain about. The driver drove around the city to pick up more people. A few people really had too much stuff packed in, it looked as if they were moving. I got myself a pretty good seat on the minibus, the one sperated seat near the door with nobody in front of me. I got all the leg space I could possibly need. The mo...

Just the one day in Addis, Assewa was guiding me for the afternoon. We went to the National Museum, then were joined by his "brother" who turned out to be pushy and unreliable and taking a course in tourism (figures). Spent 5 minutes at an awful menagerie with just lions and monkeys, then a chat joint where someone came along and supposedly said all the vacant tables were reserved, but I'm sure our buddy was persona non grata. After that I brushed him off and had injera with Assewa. These gui...

Might be time to go home

... looked at us. The time passed slowly and where morning began very chilly the afternoon brought unbearable heat. Our bus did not have AC, of couse, but neither did it have windows that opened. So we were in a moving oven. At least our side of the bus was. The other side was shaded and no one seemed to be sweating there. At one point we descended into a valley and the view was absolutely spectacular. There were herders on the side of the road with their skiiny bare ...

Of Monasteries and Manuscripts

... dinner (lamb tibs). The next morning, we booked a trip to the monasteries, many of which date from the 16th/17th centuries. Though we had expected to see three of them, our boat driver for some reason only took us to two (Ethiopia Lesson #3: Go With the Flow - There's a Decent Chance Things Won't Go As Expected). We also finally realized the reason why we seemed to have trouble communicating times of day with people (e.g. when to pick ...

Adventures in Flight IV

... asked to board the other plane. Waiting on the tarmac we watch as the other plane prepares to take off. As they start it up, only one engine and propeller are going. After a very long time and a few kicks from the ground crew, it starts with a gigantic puff of black smoke! Everyone waiting with us to board stares in disbelief as the plane begins to taxi down the runway. I find myself saying a prayer of safety for ...

A religious experience

... the boat, we was many people praying up against a wall. According to Kashz, there was a service going on, but these people were 'unclean' in the biblical sense, so they could not go inside. So they were worshiping outside the perimeter of the property. I couldn't believe the dedication of these people! Speaking with our guide on the boat ride, he was telling us that they believe this IS the ...

to the Garden of Eden

... Could not believe that this is the dry, dusty Ethiopia that we have been conditioned to think of. This is the garden of eden! Outside our hotel is on the beautiful lake Tana with trees weeping under the weight of the fruit they bear. A drive out to the famous Blue Nile falls was only 30km, but took over an hour due to the rough roads and traffic (cattle, children, women carrying wood, donkey's pulling carts, etc ...
