Addis Ababa and Entoto

The first morning was reserved for some museums: the Ethnological museum, in the former palace of Haile Selassie, but now part of the University. After that we went to the National museum that houses a replica of Lucy - the oldest hominid ever found. Later on we (I was traveling with a Dutch tour group - 12 people in total) went to Entoto. Driving up the mountain we could see many women, sometimes even young girls, carrying wood on their backs. On the top of the mountain are the Maryam Church...

Addis Ababa

We landed at Addis Ababa international at about 8.30pm after some 24hours straight in the air or air terminals, to put it mildly we were gutted. But the great thing was that we knew that Heather had arranged an airport to hotel transfer. We walked out to the usual barrage of touts, taxis, and con artists but no sign reading Davey for our pick up. Not a good thing when ones fuse is smoldering from lack of sleep and no luggage (see next story). Eventually with the aid of a borrowed mobile it wa...

Ghion and beyond...

Arrived in Addis yesterday mid day after a marathon two day multi-flight journey. My tour company met me at the airport and took me to the Ghion Hotel, a walled compound in the city with beautiful gardens. Somewhat outdated but still quite comfortable. Slept and read for most of the day and then went to the traditional hotel restaurant for a traditional meal which was served in a woven basket table on a large platter...injera and stewed meats and vegetables eaten with your hands. The waitress...

... year old Ethiopian fixer called Lalo who approached us in the street. Lalo, who always wears a woolly scarf in Ethiopian colours (red, yellow, green) notwithstanding the heat, has been incredibly useful and is eager to continue with his usefulness to me, principally because he would like me to sponsor him (i.e. hand out fistfuls of dollars) in the future. He has not actually asked for this but it is ...

Arriving in Addis

... by unbelievable dancers. Very fun! Tuesday morning, back to Gedam Sefer. Today was health workshop day and we talked about nutrition, activity, and hygiene and did a craft project. The kids asked such great questions and we had lots of fun making more crafts! They are so full of energy and are super creative-- they love singing and making up dramas. This afternoon, we left on our long and exciting trip to Assosa.

... at the panoramic Garden View restaurant managed by Lance, an African American originally from S.E. Missouri. Addis Ababa is a very nice place to visit. The people make it special with their jovial ways and outgoing personalities. The population does not think of themselves as either African, nor Arab. Rather lighter skinned Jewish decendents due to the visit of the Queen of Sheba with Solomon (she came back P ...

The management does not set the price based on any estimate of the quality of the rooms, but they are all fairly clean with en suite bath. Addis, how nice

... top of whatever our bank is charging. January 24, 2008 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia This morning we went to the Kenyan Embassy to apply for visas. Traveling by local buses and trucks from Khartoum to Addis was hard and during the most miserable part when our spirits were the lowest we cheered ourselves up by agreeing to fly from Addis to Nairobi. From what we'd heard from other travelers and from Paul Theroux's description it sounded like that leg would be the ...
