Good-Bye to Tour Group 2

I just saw off my second tour group at the airport after the cultural restaurant dinner. I was sad to see them all leave but I think Kibrom was even more sad. It was very touching: when Peter gave him his gift with an appreciation speech, Kibrom was choked up. He said it is the hardest thing for him as a tour leader - to see the people he has …

I woke up later than I expected this morning - perhaps since I went to bed at midnight last night. I was pretty much packed up so I went to breakfast immediately - around 7 am - and had another hearty breakfast to keep me for the day. I gathered my belongings and dragged my bags downstairs only to have a porter grab the big bag at the bottom …

Goodbye to Addis Ababa

A travel blog entry by dmarek

This entry will be an odd one since I am finishing here in Ethiopia today but not flying out until nearly 11 pm. It is Sunday and I have heard singing from the churches ever since I woke up this morning.

I went into breakfast a little after 7:30 am and manged to get another lovely Spanish omelet (Western omelet for us in the US). I …

Oh, oh, now I am sneezing again.

Obama has won!!!! My notes on the computer don't seem to mention this major event of the day. I woke up early and went out to check the TV news. I saw that Obama was ahead 230 to 203, but then they listed the states that each candidate was expected to win and there was a sizable list for Romney, but …

Return to Addis after the Awassa Fish Market

As we drove north to Addis, the roads and traffic became worse - especially the pollution from the exhaust. However, as usual, there were sights to be seen: haystacks, people working in fields, different kinds of cactus fences, different conveyances and the cattle and goats crossing the road, the poor overloaded donkeys. Barbara was in the …

I was favorably impressed by the Ghion after 2 nights at another hotel in Addis. I like that the Ghion is very centrally located and has its own lovely garden in which it is situated. It is an old hotel and has a certain charm because of that, but it is a bit worn around the edges too. The downside for me was that I was only able to get money out of the ATM once and over the course of my trip to Ethiopia I spent over 4 nights there at 3 different times. But then again, one of those times, 3 banks in the vicinity didn't have any cash either.
