The first morning was reserved for some museums: the Ethnological museum, in the former palace of Haile Selassie, but now part of the University. After that we went to the National museum that houses a replica of Lucy - the oldest hominid ever found. Later on we (I was traveling with a Dutch tour group - 12 people in total) went to Entoto. Driving up the mountain we could see many women, sometimes even young girls, carrying wood on their backs. On the top of the mountain are the Maryam Church...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia gunvorvWe landed at Addis Ababa international at about 8.30pm after some 24hours straight in the air or air terminals, to put it mildly we were gutted. But the great thing was that we knew that Heather had arranged an airport to hotel transfer. We walked out to the usual barrage of touts, taxis, and con artists but no sign reading Davey for our pick up. Not a good thing when ones fuse is smoldering from lack of sleep and no luggage (see next story). Eventually with the aid of a borrowed mobile it wa...

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia isaaclarArrived in Addis yesterday mid day after a marathon two day multi-flight journey. My tour company met me at the airport and took me to the Ghion Hotel, a walled compound in the city with beautiful gardens. Somewhat outdated but still quite comfortable. Slept and read for most of the day and then went to the traditional hotel restaurant for a traditional meal which was served in a woven basket table on a large platter...injera and stewed meats and vegetables eaten with your hands. The waitress...

... staying nearly three weeks, here is why.
Our first day in Ethiopia took us from the arid, desolated and corrugated roads of northern Kenya into the green, lush, cultivated and beautifully tarred roads of the Ethiopian highlands. Driving through the small villages dotting the hills felt a little like a celebrity procession. Kids, as well as adults, rushed out of their neat and clean houses to wave and greet us with huge smiles. When we waved backs, the smiles seemed, nearly ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia asalvaire... d'Obama.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia asalvaire... distributing the food parcels on the instruction of Yosuf, who knows the needs of all of the inhabitants. This compound of about 60 people is one of several, giving a permanent population of about 1500 people. Self sufficiency looks to be a fair way off, but hopefully our kit and the proceeds from the bus will help to push them in the right direction. Personally, I'd rather help a few people with a significant aid package, rather than just donate a few quid ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia spooky388... caring for the kids as they grow up to be much older, now on antiretrovirals which of course allow them to live longer and healthier. They have put together programs (like weaving) that give the kids a job and allow them to earn money. For dinner, we went our for our first authentic injera meal. The restaurant also has a music group that plays the traditional music from each region of the country ...
