... The autobahn followed the railway and much is on road cantilevered out from the hill, with a few really high bridges over the valley. Most impressive construction achievements. Efficiency all went belly up once we crossed the border into Italy as we sat at the first rail station for about 30 minutes for no apparent reason. ... of Hallstätt is directly below and the end of the lake is surrounded by mountains. Could see where we have to go tomorrow, but just enjoyed the view. Had lunch at the restaurant here to make the most of the outlook. Got the funicular down into town and walked along to the old part, said to be the oldest town in the world at over 5000 years old. ... very nice. Town is on a river, flowing with the most lovely clear water. Crossed over to look at the summer palace of the Habsburgs (of Česky Krümlov and Vienna fame) but there looked to be a photo shoot happening of the local fire brigade.
