The 2:30 hrs train ride from Nagoya to Takayama was very scenic. I really got a bit homesick on this train ride. Takayama is a small town close to the Japanes mountains also called Japanese Alps. The town has a beautiful old town and many lovely temples (with awesome picture opportunities). I did two day trips, one on top of a mountain with a cable car and another one ...

... miso, fish and raw egg. I don't feel like I missed much to be honest. In Takayama we visited a folk village with examples of all kinds of different traditional houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The biggest thing that struck me was how smoky everywhere smelt. ... breathtaking", as we overlooked the most charming valley with perhaps 40 or so of these traditional houses with their high-peaked thatched roof. Photos probably cannot do justice to the awe inspiring first glimpse. As another passenger observed: "It was like something out of a fairy tale." After that, another "traditional" Japanese lunch. This was a little too traditional for most of us, requiring that we sit on the floor. A few of us, ...

... Museum. Luckily the first JR station had free WiFi and I could check where I needed to go. Screenshots were my savior. This was how Zoe and Ryan were getting around Tokyo without a pocket WiFi. What brave souls. The local Linino line runs directly beside the museum. There's no missing it. I pre-scouted the gift shop and ate a hot dog at the cafe, then entered the museum. It's a beautiful museum. It may be called the Toyota ...
