In Takayama we visited a folk village with examples of all kinds of different traditional houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The biggest thing that struck me was how smoky everywhere smelt. It turned out that the train I needed to catch back to Gero didn't come for another hour. 6:00 pm was the last shuttle bus from Gero Station to the Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan. That train takes one hour, 50 minutes. It was 4:30 pm It's a 20 minute walk, but it's very steep. This was my ...

... was at a restaurant specializing in Hida beef which we are told is synonymous with kobe beef. Cattle are specially raised with daily massages, fed special foods including beer, and serenaded with classical music. The resulting meat is highly marbleized and extremely tender and flavourful. Perhaps this is the place to mention that it is still necessary to take ones shoes off almost every time you go into a restaurant or public building other than commercial ...
