Ayvalik, Balikesir, Turkey traceybelle... off we certainly did - it was Baltic!
Another favourite stop became the covered market where during our stay we bought a 5 lira (Ł2) bottle of wine (not recommended!), admired the tomato wearing watermelons and enjoyed numerous cups of cay and bakery products - the guys there were so friendly they even gave us figs to accompany our beverages!
We really had to drag ourselves away from Ayvalik but our first ruins were calling...
... time conquering the previous inhabitants. Hot. Did I mention that? Hot. Walked back through town, but every shop was closed for siesta.
According to the poet Homer Lesvos (aka Lesbos or Mytlini) was part of King Makaras Empire and many of the islands ancient cities were names after his daughters.
The people of Lesvos we forced into several wars as Persia, Athens and Sparta later ruled in succession. According to legend, when Lesvos finally succumbed to Athens, the Athenian council voted to castigate islanders ...
Blind luck lead us to Assos (it's in the back assos of nowhere! Boom boom), we'd been planning on travelling quite a bit further but for once our reading of scales on the map let us down and we decided to take our chances down a coast road. Thank God we did, the place is amazing, a ...

As well as home to the Red Basilica, built within an ancient temple to the Egyptian God Serapis, preached in by Saint ...
Izmir, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey cotafamily4... over the town. We then passed tiny islands on the Greek side. On the Turkish side of the straits the islands around Ayvalik were silhouetted in the haze. As we got further North the Lesbian mountains got higher and steeper, looming above wee fishing villages in the bays. As we rounded the headland we saw that Molyvos was dominated by yet another castle. The houses climbed the hill beneath in a higgledy - piggledy manner. Many of them had balconies which seemingly ...
Mithymna, Greece chickensafloat... the rest of the gory details, but we will say - what bliss to reboard the bus having attended to our business! At any rate, after that rather demoralizing episode, the bus deposited us (probably very thankfully) in Ephesus at five thirty in the morning. So right there we sat for an hour before we felt comfortable setting out on foot to find our hostel. And again, what bliss to arrive at a hostel early in the morning, tired and sick, and find a private bed and bathroom awaiting. We ...
Selcuk, Turkey stevecori... for two hours "long live Dionysus, goddess of Ephesus." John would have been there at that time. We sat in the 25,000-seat auditorium and absorbed the imagery before we continued. We then followed the chariot marks to the library, a two story building with an elaborate facade of columns and statues of Virtue and Justice. The avenue turned to the left here and we followed it up a hill past old fountains, small temples, public toilets, private houses, a large covered ...
