A burnt bum

... to play but no one appears to take seriously, except I suppose the guys running The Bamboo Bar. It would appear that the Police need to be seen to be doing the right thing rather than actually enforcing laws. As well as random alcohol raids they do urine testing for drugs, but only on the Muslim population. This part of Malaysia (Kelantan) has very strictly enforced Muslim laws. Alcohol is only available from Chinese outlets (of which there are very few, most ...

... electrical storm across the other side of the island so we watched that, probably the best entertainment on the island! Apart, that is, from the diving and snorkeling. We're reliably informed that the snorkelling here is as good as the diving so tomorrow (when it's a bit quieter, and all the locals have left to go back to work) we will go on a snorkeling trip around the island. It's pretty much an all day event and takes you to 6 different places. Getting into the water ...

Travelling to Kota Bharu

... on the idea that the train trip could be fun. In our wait at Jerantut we discovered that although the big cities of Malaysia might be good for vegetarians and vegans, not so much the small towns. We ended up buying the makings for peanut butter and banana sandwiches, which we made at the train station. The train itself was a little run down, but not too bad and it was actually a lot of fun seeing the countryside, which was a mix of jungle, rural towns and small scale farming.

... border. Then we met the first agent and gave him a package and he shipped us onto a pickup truck which brought us to a bus station. Then we transferred to a coach to bring us to Hat Yai. That journey took forever but we got there. Then there was kinda a mixup and through the help of a lad from the bus company we managed to find the next guy to payoff for the next stage of the journey! We then were pushed onto a minivan full of malay and thai people and ...

... we eventually left camp at 11.00 when our guide carrying the ropes put his head out of his hammock and "Ready now". He had been waiting for us and we were waiting for him. Went to the top of the waterfall nearest to us where Yo was rigging up the ropes and saftey gear. We had a choice of a dry descent or a wet one in the Falls. Tony went first and opted for the wet run..... rigged up he began the descent and after about 20 metres started to walk sideways towards ...

The Malay City

The East Coast is very different from the west coast of Malaysia. The country is a melting pot of cultures. The Malay influence is most strongly felt in the east, and especially so in Kota Bharu. We arrived here by an 8 or 9 hour bus journey across from Chinese dominated Penang, and were greeted by what seemed to be a different country. Most Malays are Muslims, and so there is very little drinking, if any in Kota Bharu. It is ...

... but this was a whole new experience. I have never seen half of the fruits that were for sale here. Not only had I never seen them before, but I had never even heard of them. This market had more than fruit though. There were also pretty substantial meat and fish sections. The meat section was totally unexpected. Katie, if you are reading this, you might want to ...

... to find close to the date, to I thought ill leave in one day and try to make it all the way down the country to Malaysia, and then all the way back up the other coast and over to Ko Phangan for the full moon party - all in the same day! Its kinda like traveling from Auckland to Wellington, and then all the way back to Auckland and then catching a ferry to Great Barrier Island in the same day. It all started with me getting up at 5 in the morning ...
