      ... catholic. - San Fernando is completely made of marble. Very beautiful.. It was a center of power for the church out of Rome. - silk was an important industry dating back and it has been recently revived when the local artisans asked for the medieval silk making machines be revived from the local museums and put to work again - they have almost 3 miles worth of bike paths on TOP of the walls (ramparts) that surround the city. We took this path twice ...

      ... into the courtyard and then figuring out which door was the entrance to the hotel was a bit challenging, but we made it with a little help from a neighbor and then the hotel worker meet us at the inside of the 1st locked door. Although it is not much to look at on the outside, the inside of the B&B is gorgeous, the staircase leading up to the hotel suites is amazing. (We are so grateful for the recommendations of Marcel a New Yorker ...

      ... work on the food. The girls chatted with Emmanuele, occasionally asking him about me, my level of Italian and my relationship to the farm. They seemed fairly embarrassed to discover that I was understanding about 75% of what they were saying, and that they could not easily discuss various topics without an eager and foreign ear close by.

      We talked about what the two of them did in Italy -- both of the girls teachers of Italian ...

      ... out... but it was a very, very interesting and fun day. We ended the day at a little ristorante where we enjoyed bruschetta, insalata mista, and spaghetti...with wine, of course. Tomorrow, we are taking a wine tour into Chianti.

      I've been trying to complete this blog all evening (Friday), but is not cooperating.

      I'm glad to be leaving my Rome hostel - the trains weren't that noisy, but it somehow attracted a large number of backpackers who had loud drunken conversations in the echoing halls from midnight to 4am. Also my mattress had a fist sized hole through it and the shower temperature never made it past lukewarm. On the other hand, the wi-fi worked in the lobby and it was in a good location. Venice accommodation (my next stop after Florence) ...
