... common to most. But, as the Dominican Republic deals with growing pains of a swelling population, changing economy, and movement away from agriculture and jobs working with one's hands, I believe it is important to reinforce and model these important skills of self-sufficiency and good nutrition. All in all, I feel like my work here is valuable and that there is potential to make small difference in someone's life. I am fulfilled ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... are soil conservation, gardening, and moneymaking. There is also a possibility of starting a stove project to make more environmentally friendly and healthier cooking stoves. For a secondary project, I would love to begin a history project to highlight the rich culture of the region. Your History Lesson for the Day Samaná is a rich amalgam of various cultures and many nations have historical claim here including pirates, the U.S, Haiti, France ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... feel the wind in my hair (or in my ropes, as ray calls the braids) and yes, I like the speed. Well, only made it to about 65kph as the scooter has only one gear, but it felt fast! I didn´t tell ray that the back brake wasn´t really working, which is ok, cos most of the time going down hill you only use the front brake, but when you turn a corner, you´re supposed to use the back brake (as I found out in one slippery, bloody incident on the farm when I ...
Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic couplakiwis... they would yell 'Hey Canada' and give us a wave. One thing that I noticed in the Dominican was that, generally speaking, the people weren't as friendly as other places I've visited. It was the same everywhere we went, with the staff, the vendors on the beach (which there were very many of), shop keepers. Once you said hello and made an effort it changed but at first it was a chilly reception. After a couple days of recuperating on the beach I felt up to a day trip into Santo Domingo.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic catapillar... money, I don't get ANY of the money!! All donations are tax deductible and 100% of the money goes to fund the project in my community. So, I am asking all of you to give it some thought and, if you are able, make a donation! Any amount, small or large, is greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate at this time but you know anyone else who may be interested, please pass along the information to them. You can copy and paste ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic margaretkirlin... out and donating this card game, please email me and let me know! The most difficult thing I am facing in my last months here is trying to figure out how my projects will go on once I am gone. The guilt I feel in leaving and wondering if I come back in one year if the girl I counseled about not having sex until she is ready will be pregnant, or if my entire Escojo club will be delinquents running around causing problems or in ...
Pimentel, Dominican Republic lisalew... in Santo Domingo, passing through the most lenient customs check I've ever experienced. It literally took me all of ten minutes to get from the plane to the busses waiting in front of the airport - backpack, tourist card and passport stamp all in hand, not to mention the complimentary rum and coke ladled out to visitors as a warm Dominican welcome. I am currently staying with a family in the heart of the capital after meeting ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic chimichenga... felt a little wussy, but you just get used to it being 80's and everything else is freezing :) But I will have to get to her site by myself and figure everything out, so I'm a little nervous about it, but it will be a good test of my Spanish and transportation abilities. I'll spend 3.5 days with her, so I'm really looking forward to the visit. Then the next week, we leave for our other training site, which is on the beach ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic kelsianne82... link on this website. You will be able to donate a dollar or two to my ¨camera fund¨. If everyone who reads my blog donates five dollars, I´ll have a new camera in no time. If my camera somehow resurfaces, I´ll donate all the money to my youth or one of my projects. Please help me out! Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years. Never take for granted the family and friends you have, because one day you may not be able to spend this special time of year with them.
Pimentel, Dominican Republic lisalew... rather pleasant, during the day around the high eighties and at night quite brisk with a stong breeze. So i have decided to build my house. Yes pick up your jaws, it really is not that hard. It is going to be very fun i think . My whole family is going to help me. We are going to start really soon so i will take pictures. I am going to give my first real meeting in front of about fifty farmers this ...
