I visited the Stupa's at Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh with my parents a year ago. The stay there was quite enjoyable. The Gateway Retreat that we rested at offered its customers AC rooms and a restaurant that served some of the most delicious food. Apart from this, the place was well connected and secure too.
Brief history of Sanchi : The first Stupa at Sanchi was built by Emperor Ashoka , the great(273-236 BC) and a pillar , also called the Ashoka Pillar, infront of the Stupa . This is the national emblem of India. Ashoka was married to the princess of Vidisha, which is near to Sanchi. ... we found a cracking restaurant near our hotel called Manohar, which served excellent veg dishes, ice cream, cakes and juices. We went back four times in three days! As we were staying in the Muslim half of town we spent the afternoon looking at some of the impressive mosques, including one believed to be the world's smallest. Once at the platform, lo and behold who was waiting there, Dikshit! Again, non-stop with the questions and when we asked him what he was doing at our platform, at that time, he said he was waiting for his family to arrive later that evening. Either truly fascinated by us or just **** at telling the time, but in a nutshell one of the most helpful weirdo’s I’ve ever met, thanks for getting us out of Bhopal ...
Emperor Asoka (273-236 BC), known as a philosopher-king of the Mauryan Empire, adopted Buddhism in 262 BC, declaring it the state religion over the previous ruling Hindu religion.
