I started looking for hotel signs. Followed a few signs but didn't find anything. I was driving through a valley with lush hills on both sides and streams flowing along the road. Just after Spinedi-Ca' San Giorgio I saw a hotel and restaurant on the side of the road, with parking. Perfect!

Friendly staff that spoke enough English, good price. Wifi and a good restaurant. What a day!

Along this hike I've often seen patches of snow on the higher slopes, but never mountains completely covered in snow. I suddenly realize that there's a whole other level to the Alps that I haven't even gotten close to... But now it's time to start heading down hill. There's a path on ...

Day 285 5 hrs, 8 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 29.6 kms Technically I'm in Italy, but as my friend in Flies reminded me, this region is historically and culturally part of Austria. Even now it has some autonomy, with it's own transportation system and education system (German first, then Italian) All the towns have both German and Italian names. The whole area still has a pretty Austrian "feel" to it. My first town Curon Venosta, is actually a ...

... give a view of the gorge far, far below. The main gorge actually continues south into Switzerland. This road is climbing up the wall of a smaller gorge up over the pass to Italy. Finally, after one last tunnel, I pop out in a shallow narrow valley witha stream running next to it. Looks like I'm safe. There's a somewhat modern stone fortress pressed right against the cliff, guarding the way... and then... the grassy fields begin once again. I've ...
