... Laura in the room, and took the boys downstairs to try out the bowling. It is a 9 pin game that uses a smaller ball with no finger holes. We got instructions from the older German gentleman, who turned the game on for us. Instructions were in rapid German, so we just followed the few simple rules about where to roll the ball from (which they made clear through repetition when we were obviously not getting it), and had fun until Laura rejoined us and it was time ...

It was a glorious, sunny morning for our 40 minute drive up the valley to the ski area. I didn't mention yesterday that in typical fashion for us, we kind of put off making hotel reservations until pretty late, so we didn't pick a ski area so much as found a good hotel and then found the closest ski area to the hotel. ... peacock won the rights to sit on the bench and the crow backed down in shame. It was riveting to watch. We also saw an all-white peacock, something neither of us had ever seen.

... and 2 colleges, so the are lots of young people, poorly dressed wandering around. It does have a lovely Carillon that chimes 3 times a day. It was imported from Germany by a wine and beer merchant. He installed it, with 2 dancing figures in the tower above his store, as advertising.

The fortress was never taken in battle, but like the Salzburg fortress, it was surrendered to Napoleon who then blew it up.
