    We were supposed to take the cable cars and cog wheel train to Alpspix and Zugspitz for Adrian's birthday but it snowed overnight and both mountains were covered in cloud. We had to come up with a plan B and found the very pretty town of Mittenwald was close by. The buildings in this part of Bavaria are painted with murals which is quite different to other areas.     We drove to Fussen at the foot of the Alps to visit the model for Disneyland's fairytale castle, Schloss Neuschwanstein. We decided to visit both castles in the town as King Ludwig II who planned Neuschwanstein actually grew up in Hohenschwangau and was fascinated by the romantic tales and decorations in his boyhood holiday home.
