... sleeping in harsh, cold conditions that proved too much for many soldiers. As a result of the remoteness of the outposts, supplies were few and far between for the soldiers, and during the winter they had to make do with what they had for weeks at a time. The war in the Dolomites lasted for four years, and took many lives, more often through hunger and cold than enemy fire.

You can still find many of these installations while hiking in ...

We crossed the border from Slovenia into Austria with no formalities, just a wave through. The little alpine villages and steep mountains of Austria were just like postcards. White snow and white blinding mist made it really ******* the eyes. Put down the visor and it would mist up almost instantly or condensation would cling to the front of it making it impossible to see ahead. There was only one thing to do and that was ride with the visor open and get blinded by the white!! This of course also had problems and that was the ...

... I chose to take were extremely busy with slow going tourists in their camper vans or big trucks so it was nothing but go slow for mile after mile.

The rain had thankfully given up and much of the road surfaces were dry but it was still freezing out here. Plodding along at such slow speeds on a motorcycle in such cold weather is extremely cold work as the body is not burning up any energy so simply gets cold and after about 50 miles of this I was in desperate need ...
