... it provided major physical challenge and probably one of the scariest moments of my years of hiking.

The start of the walk to the waterfalls or cascades, the Cascata de Fanes, was just 15 or so minutes’ drive from Cortina near Faimes. The receptionist was right; it was a comparably sedate walk along forest paths beside the Rio di Fanes. It was however a very steep route; in fact I climbed and then descended over ...

... an ant's nest. I've included plenty of photos but I'll be surprised if they can convey the extent, drama and grandeur of the scenery.

But the thing that impressed me most was the clear tension on the faces of the entrants I could see ...

I had often been told the Dolomite Mountains would be worth a visit and over the last two days I've had the opportunity to find out. I’ve never been here before but if my hike today is any guide, I’ll be looking to include it in future itineraries.I trust my photos do justice to the ruggedly dramatic but spectacularly beautiful scenery. It was a four hour hike and I found it relatively tough, probably ...

Interesting day today. Started out cool and threatening to rain. Grabbed some fuel and a coffee at Intermache before heading up Petit St Bernard. Almost at the top the rain arrived with some determination. The council had erected and maintained a changing shed on the roundside for motorcyclists caught in the wet. It was where they put the rubbish skips really, but it was clean and dry and big enough to stand up in while we changed which was brilliant. Continued up and the ...
