The last two days were spent hiking through the country that makes up the Great War Museum, which includes the mountains and paths where most of the fighting took place in WW1. We started out yesterday hiking from the Albergo Falzarego, to the Refugio Averau. It was raining and cold and we started out with lots of clothes and rain gear. As we climbed higher up the paths, it began to brighten. However, when we got to the Refugio Averau, it started to rain again and ...

This hike goes around three famous towers and is very popular. We drove up to the Rifugio Auronzo and started out walking around the three towers. All around, in every direction, the views were spectacular. In one particular direction it looked just like Mordor from The Lord of the Rings trilogy! (Posted by Val): Monday and Tuesday were spent hiking in the mountains north west of Cortina. We started out with cloudy weather, which rapidly progressed to a howling gale, forcing us into a nearby refuge to warm up with cappuccinos and hot chocolate. Fortunately the weather subsequently improved and after arriving at the Rifugio La Varella (our overnight location) and having a quick coffee, we set off on a leisurely walk in the nearby hills. After negotiating ...

We had a nice breakfast in the hotel and then packed up and met up with the group at the hotel lobby. We all drove up to the start of the trail at the Restorante da Strobel and set off into the mountains. Along the way there were many reminders and sites surrounding the battles fought in these mountains between the Italian and Austrian armies in WW1. We passed old ...

We had our nice breakfast as usual and pulled our suitcases to the Rialto bridge area of the Grand Canal. There we bought two tickets to travel to the Marco Polo airport via water taxi. We got on right away. The boat was crowded and had a couple of windows open. When we exited the canal and entered the lagoon, the waves broke and came through the window soaking a couple of people. We were smart enough to close our window so stayed dry. ...
