And CHEESE!!

After a week in Basel we jumped on the train to visit my Uncle and Aunt (Heinz and Elsa) in Gossau – a small town in the north east of Switzerland. On the way we spent a few hours in Zurich where we just wandered around the city centre, had lunch and sat by the lake. Heinz and Elsa met us at the train station and walked us back to their place – about 2 minutes away! They took us for a drive up to a place which gives a great view over St Gallen ...

So, Liechtenstein. the smallest country in Europe. We got stooped at the border, and asked for our passports, and what we were doing there. No problems though, and we were soon on our way.

We were almost immediately at the Capital city, Vaduz. We were definitely not going to miss the chance to do the postcards etc. So we looked for somewhere to park. We drove around a bit and ...

... Feldkirch I got lost. Actually I was just trying to get to McDonald's because the group wanted a bathroom break and the public toilets here were not to our standards. Anyway, I drove past the McDonald's twice - once my fault and once the navigator's - and drove down a pedestrian only section of road before we gave up and continued on our journey out of town and deeper into Austria.

... can't take photos in the library and I can describe in words the beauty of the library sufficiently. Let's just say if you have the chance, go take a look.

It was time for food so we found a little cafe and had a bite to eat before tracking down my parents again. They were hungry because they had been waiting for us before they ate (oops!) so we returned to the same cafe and they had a quick meal before we returned to the car. Next stop: Austria!

Just Passing Through

... right past without so much as a glance. I know that vacant look, that studied gait, every step a calculated risk, every second a calculated eternity, an algebra with no variables. JUNKIE! He'd lie to his mother to get what he wants, then forget it just as fast. That's why he's hitting on strangers in the bus station. But you know all that. Remember Samuel L. Jackson in Jungle Fever? So I decide to follow the guy into ...

... her a slapper. Eventually we all got on board and headed off though. We stopped in Lichtenstein before lunch. Lichtenstein is the forth smallest country, and has a royal family. You can get postcards of them, all dressed in the traditional royal outfit of ... jeans. Classy. It was their annual celebration day honouring the day their former king abdicated and gave it to his son. A few years ago there was talk of making his role more ...

... the [crop] after it had been cut. They were using hand held tools - pitch forks and stuff. You'd think it was a different cetury. Mind you, it is now. There was a Swiss faimily in the chalet behind us and I kept up a correspondence with the oldest girl, Pia, for a few years, until I stopped learning German at school and couldn't get my teacher to translate my letters any more... The holiday was also memorable as it was the first time that we had ever seen duvets ...

The Alps

Nestled deep in the Alps is yet another of these wonderful little countries which are of course, holdovers from the feudal systems of the medeval period. Liechtenstein, being a principality, is ruled by a Prince and Princess and their council. There are seven towns in the country with the principal 'city ...
