    ... and stained glass, still stands. It is beautiful. The most intricately carved altar is actually upstairs, behind a modern pipe organ. The church was cool on this 80 degree day, but we eventually moved on. We popped in and out of several shops, then were delightfully trapped by octogenarian Annaliese Friese in her shop. She and Rick Steves are great friends, as attested to by the many photos of the two of them in the shop over the years, ...

    ... and our Mazda hatchback and took to the roads. I got to drive the autobahn. So 120 km per hour isn't that fast, I topped 150, and decided that was fast enough. But holy moly cars were speeding around me like I was sitting still! We made it to Rotenburg o.d.T. easy. Finding our hotel inside was a chore. More later. Time to get out and see ...

    Hirschbach has been the home town of the Freudenthalers for 4 generations. The family Bakerie and Gasthaus still operates in the town's centre and is run by the 4th Bakrmeister Wolfgang Freudenthaler.

    Hirschbach is stunning, the original buildings and the church were built in the 1700s and the quaint village still holds their charm. ...

    ... Had a typically German meal with beer of course.

    Spent the next morning slowly meandering through the old town and stopping for schneeballe (sweet pastry balls) and bratwurst rolls. I got totally carried away taking photos!

    ... painted houses - the boys kept singing the Welcome to Duloc song off Shrek as that's what the town looks like. We had a look round the shops and of course had to buy some Christmas decorations from the original german Christmas Shop. Again had lots of tasty german food, walked in the park and along the city walls. Final stop Belgium ...
