Zoo & a bit of history

Matt and I headed off to the Koelner Zoo on the metro. It was lovely: very green, glass exclosures. There was a big family of elephants (about 16), 3 hippos who were having fun in the water and making loud noises and showing off their large teeth. Matt loved the orangatangs (the babies were playing) and the cheetahs (who were prowling up and down). A flock of flaming pink flamingo's and long legged ducks.

... pics of the local homes as we were quite taken by the home sizes and architecture. Tidy, tidy and more tidy homes. We pick up the travel blog having said farewell to Patty and Bob in Amsterdam and following a nice walk in Rembrandt Park by the hotel on Monday morning, we were picked up by our dear Dutch friend of 42 years - Puck and Ben Roncken who served in Moose Jaw in the early 70's where Ben was an exchange instructor pilot. They took us to their home in Roermond where we spent a very enjoyable and relaxing day and a half.

The pictures will attest to the beauty of this quaint ...

Lot's of chocolates available that we don't see in Australia, we have nearly demolished the block of dark chocolate with pomegranate and chili. The fort in Maastricht was built in 1800s to protect the town from the French. It didn't help much as they had ...

Walking in Eifel National Park

A travel blog entry by gotte on Oct 21, 2015

We had a couple of walks in the Eifel National Park punctuated by a picnic lunch. Our first walk was along a trail path for the disabled, nice and wide, smooth and no gradient. But it did go to a vantage point where we could look out to the lakes that are part of this 144 km square park. The area was original forested with beech trees but other species were introduced over the years. Now they are trying to return to the native beech forest. Although the weather was fine it was quite cold ...
