Ciudad Erasmus

Tante Mary fon Villingen-Schwenningen

... dates from the 13th century. This would have been around that time that almost half the population died in the Black Plague. As we left on our walk, the light drizzle turned into an absolute all-out downpour. We stopped in at the old church on the main square. A plaque inside appeared to indicate that the church was dedicated in 1538. We got quite wet before we found shelter conveniently in an ice cream shop. There we visited a bit and had the fanciest gellati ...

Glassblowing factory

Day trip from Villingen. Wolfach has a factory cum tourist attraction where they blow the glass manually. It was good to watch them making vases etc. in the traditional way. The highlight for me was dobbing Roz in to get up on the stage and blow her own vase. She did a good job, and we bought the vase and brought it home. A very special souvenir.

Cuckoo clock country

... whole process to us. Also went for a walk up the path that follows Germany's highest waterfall. Saw the worlds largest working cuckoo clock. It's literally the size of a house. So many woodcarving shops in this town. We caught a bus to another local town that has a clock museum. Some amazing gear in there.

Switzerland

Just a day trip to see this old city. Lots of brightly painted buildings with ornate oriel windows. Most of the windows were carved with scenes or fancy designs, sometimes painted, sometimes both. Lots of fountains and statues. Found a chocolate shop and pigged out.

Very small town

Stayed here a couple of nights. Just a really pretty place in the heart of the Black Forest. Got my first look at a woodcarvers shop and was blown away by the quality of the work. The fine detail has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Snow everywhere ...

The Black Forest

This was what I really came to Europe for. Freiburg was just the beginning of an awesome adventure for me. The mountains and the forest and the cake. We caught a cable car up to the top of the mountain and wandered in the snow. Got some great photos. We made Freiburg our base and toured a fair bit around the region. Spent a night here and there and came back to Freiburg for the festival. Took about two hundred photos in two hours one day; they had a ...

Germany, Finally

So, I finally made it to Germany! We all got back on the airplane late that evening, waited around forever, and finally took off for London. Once we got there, we all went to customer service and worked things out. I was hoping to catch an early flight to Stuttgart so that I'd meet up with my peers and coordinators on time, but I got in too late and had to take an afternoon flight, meaning ...
