... Tatiana, we head off to find the cottage where Irish are staying in Astien, find it first go(only 6 houses in village and it is the first one we come to), up very narrow road where someone has to backup every time you meet oncoming traffic. Guy is driving like a local now, I just close my eyes and hang on tight. Wonderful rustic cottage with big garden full of noisy Irish and Poms!

The good news is that the clutch seems to be fit and well. The van is front-wheel drive and rather back heavy anyway so I think the combination of that and the madly steep hill meant that the tyres just couldn't get any grip. Firstly we had to go into a cavern (the Vaporium) that ran into the side of ...

... I passed the bakery 7 minutes too late to avoid its lunchtime closing. Daunted, I continued the descent – which was quite pleasant save for the coarseness of the chip-and-seal roadway- to Castillon where to my surprise I found a Casino that was open. My elation was short-lived, however, when I discovered it was already sold out of bread for the day (save for those that had been reserved. ...

... looking for a place to get a bite of lunch, but all the places we tried were running Father's Day dinners and were full. Lori very kindly gave me a piece of her black bread and cheese, without which I would probably not completed the day. I tried to talk Peter and Lori into taking Barry's "alternate" route, to no avail, so on we went to tackle the third col which was supposed to be around 5% over 14 Kms. In my humble opinion, and that of most who did this climb, ...
