Mahires to Aghir
... Corrie has been running a little hot in the North African heat. This has caused much stress at home, and we are currently trying to send a new fan to Egypt. The situation has caused less stress in the car, as we feel the same heat Corrie does, and feel its pain. The crew has been keeping an eye on it, and all photos taken with the bonnet open are only precautionary stops, and not forced stops to let Corrie ...
Jerba: Dirt and shrubs
... a camel or horse. By the conclusion of the tour, I (and everyone else) was coated with a thin venire of sand, my hair was matted from dirt as if I had plastered it with hairspray, and I could feel the grittiness of sand in my mouth.
Jerba was a nice place for us to relax for a few days and do a whole lot of nothing, but I would not make it a future vacation destination.

The island of Jerba
Heading south we decided to go to Jerba, as it is renowned for the beaches!
After Mahdia, Jerba was our next stop, apparently the most popular part of Tunisia according to the Lonely Planet. We spent out first night just outside Houmt Souk, the accommodation was OK, except that Petra found a mouse in her rucksack, and just about woke up the whole hotel with her shriek! It was just a small field mouse!!
The island was pleasant, but I must admit, it would be far better ...
The Isle of Djerba
... as well as the medina area of Houmt Souk, Djerba's main market town. The medina was very quaint with its traditional Moorish buildings looking out over pretty cobbled squares. Winding lanes are fringed with craft and antique stores and traders are willing to haggle over goods such as ceramics, jewellery and spices. Many of the locals wore traditional dress which seemed similar to Mayan costumes from Guatemala!
