Suzhou.. Venice of East

We went off the hotel at 7:10am heading to the train station. It takes almost 30 minutes to reach the train station if there is no traffic. It's my first day at Shanghai, almost quarter day and it was cloudy as usual. You can imagine what a city looks like at night but Shanghai is really different. It's like wedding day at my country when you decorate house with colorful lights. That's is Shanghai! I said to myself: "I will come back! Never mind now I have adventures to catch up".

Guilin to Suzhou

Left for the airport at 8 AM. It was about a 1.5 hour ride back to the Guilin Airport. Our flight left a little late at 1130 AM for Shanghai. Had lunch on the plane. Most flights, whether 1 or 2 hours, serve something (not peanuts). The highlight of today’s lunch was a Kit Kat bar although the rice and noodles weren’t bad. Flying into Shanghai you can see the sea of high rise apartments/condos. We have been told after each flight to check our luggage for damage. Both of us...

suzhou day 1

we' arrived at our hotel around 10 pm, everyone ws pretty exhausted after the long flight and what was normally a 1 hr drive from the airport turned into 3 hours because of the start of a big tourism festival of some kind. We got to see fireworks over the city, that was kind of neat. The airport is very modern, clean, efficient. we weren't allowed to take pictures of anything inside the airpoirt. suzhou is the home of our guide, eugenia ( her real name, her father was a profesor of English) s...

... street garbage collection hut. Just past the hut a group of children wait for the bus to pick them for school. They begin jumping and waving as we approach, shouting 'Hello', or ‘Good Morning'. We slow down as we try to get through the crowd gathered in front of the local Tim Hortons. It's not a real Tim Hortons, but a vendor who has baked a variety of breads, pastries, and cakes. She sells them from her ...

The Silk capital of China

... br>I am not sure if I have always been a bit of a wimp at crossing the road. I grew up in a small village but did move to the big city when I was 12 and don’t remember being traumatised. Maybe the Tufty club did a good job or maybe it was just the sense of immortality that the young have. It was many years later that Julie pointed out that my desire to hold her hand as we crossed the road was more for my benefit than hers as she had ...

A Typical Day At Mudu International School

... All of the students are super polite and happy, and very very very respectful. We have no classroom management issues at all. It's pretty different teaching here. Every student greets you with a smile and hello when you pass them in the hall. They politely and happily say goodbye at the end of every class. It's pretty cool. It's like they all take happy pills everyday. Very very nice kids.

Lois, Beth and I ride our bikes to school everyday ...

... an hour, but couldn't take it any more. I took a shower and by the time I returned Steve was stirring. So I went to get some breakfast baozi while he got ready. The first order of business was getting Steve's return tickets to Beijing. That was an adventure. The CITS office was in a ****** little hotel and it was just a regular hotel room on the 3rd floor. We managed to find it and his tickets. Then we took a ...

Out and about in Shanghai

... of me getting it to the UK (undamaged). The one thing that I have paid for in Shanghai was a trip up the TV tower - a huge tower in Shanghai with two large balls and a big spike (that resembles a space rocket!). I guess it would be equivalent to our Sky tower only somewhat more extravagant on the design front (take a look at the photo). The trip up was well worth the view, I found myself surprisingly mesmorised by the huge number of boats on the river - I was continually on the look ...
