My uncle and I went out for dinner and he drove around the city a bit. Just so that I could see the place. I totals fell asleep. I was so so so tired. lol. Man I am useless. Nywho, dinner. We went to this seafood restaurant. And it was brilliant. The prices for my meal ...

planning the trip in Jo'burg

We landed in Johannesburg, "the most dangerous place in the southern African countries", at night. Philly, the driver from the hostel, picked us up and we went straight to bed. You are never sure how dangerous these places really are when you read about them, you have to wait until you are there and hear it from the locals. The people working at our hostel basically told us not to walk anywhere. We felt pretty trapped there. But ...

Home sweet home

... they were sprawled all over the headlines of every paper. But what struck me most of all was the fact that so many South Africans still lived in the country despite this when they could easily have emigrated and most likely the reason they did is because South Africa will always be home to them and there is no place like home. For every problem South Africa has there are probably ten reasons why it is a great country. Strongest of which is the strong family and ...

The politics of succession

... that they will call 218 witnesses to testify against Zuma. His trial is to start in August. I suspect that Zuma's trial will have a huge effect on South Africa's democracy. Will the trial proceed, or will the ANC cadres find a way to abort the legal process? If the latter, will this trigger another wave of flight on the part of South Africa's white minority, still an economically indispensable managerial class?

From the Drakensberg to Jo'burg

... It was fantastic. When you go up the Sani pass you actually leave South Africa and enter the country of Lesotho. It is a small country completely surrounded by South Africa. It is called the Kingdom of the Sky as it is 75 per cent highlands and 25 per cent lowlands. At the top our guide took us into the home of a woman who lives at the top of the pass and told us a bit about Lesotho culture. Of course, we didn't spend nearly enough time there. How can ...

A long drive to Stellenbosch

A long day on the truck. We stopped at a roadside cafe called Ronnie's Sex Shop. Michelle told us the story behind the name. It seems that Ronnie opened this café more or less in the middle of nowhere and called it Ronnie's Shop. One night his buddies came along and painted Sex on the sign and it became Ronnie's Sex Shop and soon was a famous stopping place on the ...

With Bill and Cheryl Jahns in Johannesburg

... over for dinner Thursday evening and we had a great time talking about South Africa and the future of the Church here. This is early Friday morning and Bill will take us to the airport as we continue on to Malawi. Not sure what our Internet connectivity will be, but keep checking back with the blog. We will be logging our daily experiences and will upload them as we get to the Internet locations. We are excited about being with the Churches in Africa again.

Arrival in South Africa

... and Mikado biscuits as well as the previous day's Examiner newspaper from Ireland. We then hit the sack for 2/3 hrs just to make up for lost time. We then got up and went for a drive into Jo'burg and had a walk around. The place is huge, absolutely massive. We went into this hotel for a look, it was like a giant hollow triangle with all the rooms on the sides, you could look right up and see the very top of the place, I think that it had something like 43 floors.
