Xi'an - The Teracotta Warriors!

We travelled during the day by the train to Xi'an. It was fascinating to be part of a packed train - mainly families, workers and students going to Xi'an after the long National Holiday. This year, they have been able to put together 2 weekends and 5 days to make a really extended holiday. There were just a few other small tour groups [not more than 7 or 8] on board. The tourist 'season' is really just about over now.
We got into conversation with a young woman who lives in Luoyang but st...

Not in Kansas Anymore

... course, we were shown up by the Chinese salesman who was playing "Bridge over Troubled Water." I left when he started "Rainy Days and Mondays." For lunch, we went out for Chinese food and shopped in the market next door. Some of the salesmanship became a little aggressive, one who stalked Sarah to the point we had to circle around her to ward off the attempt. The terra cotta museum was amazing, thousands of soldiers of different ...

... for money, they were doing the best they could to treat the animals well. The funny thing about these creatures is that it is almost impossible to take a bad picture of them. I snapped away for hours and each picture was as good or better than the last. The only problem with this reserve, is that it became a rescue centre for other animals. These other animals do not attract the same kind of financial support as the pandas and unfortunately it shows. There were ...

Feng Shui, Tang Tombs and Temples

... The most common Feng Shui animals are dragons, lions, dragon horses, turtles and cranes. The first two were normally reserved for emperors in ancient times. You simply place your Feng Shui animal in position to counter the bad Feng Shui and you are set, and the bigger the better. Each animal has it's own meaning: Dragons and Lions both seem to be for protection and good luck, dragon horses for success and also good luck, turtles for ...

Pollution sickness

... the Great Mosque in the afternoon which was really serene and even had birds singing in the trees - the mosque is still in use today. As a result of the polluted, dry air, I drank a record 5 large bottles of water today, as well as tea and as a consequence went to the toilet 4 times at the Warriors alone! The atmosphere then hit me, as well as a few members of the group with the development of a cold and sore throat.

Day Nine (Friday)

... After dinner, we came back to the hotel, where we obviously now have more convenient internet connections and relaxed and are preparing for leisurely trip to see the terracotta warriors tomorrow. Today the weather is, again, beautiful and upper 60's and sunny. Athough the air is much more polluted here and you can feel it in your lungs much more. It is the dry season, so the dust is stirred much more by the wind.
