Sleepless nights
I had all of the above plus a thumping headache for about three days, so we decided the magic pills had to be taken, I hadn't reached moderate AMS - vomitting.
Periche was our rest day, in theory we should have had two rest days to acclimatise but we had little time so had whittled it down to one. I took the pills and drank lots ...
... We decided to join up and the next day we visited Bhaktapur, which is very much like a medieval city with a lot of temples. It was very peaceful and the fact that no cars are allowed in the center only adds to the nice atmosphere. After this we went to Bodnath, which is very famous for its Buddhist stupa. I remember seeing pictures of this before I went to Nepal and I think most of you will recognize it. Then Sebastien and I went to ...
Kathmandu, Nepal robinvschendel... house with smoke spilling from the chimney.
At sundown, the skies clear and we go outside for pristine views of the great plateau. The white blanket of snow gives way at times to black rock. Night sets on, and we realize how high we are. The moon has not risen above the nearest ridge, and in the illuminated night the mountains seem superimposed behind the monastery. Their presence is imminent, surreal in their blue glow ...

Kathmandu, Nepal jdcabanel... married there. We watched the DVD of the event sat on the living room floor.
The next day we got up early and had a walk around Old Kathmadu. All the locals were setting up their market stalls and getting ready for the day ahead. We had a good breakfast in the street of sel roti and chiya. We then ventured into Thamel, where we got lost in amongst the hundreds of trekking shops lining the maze of streets.

... also known as monkey temple, as loads of monkeys guard it. Monkey temple consists of a stupa, shrines and yet more temples for different gods and godesses. Loads of people go there to pray, there are loads of prayer wheels and prayer flags sending off Buddist mantras into the sky. We looked round all the different temples, the views of Kathmandu and Kathmandu Valley were amazing as temple is in the mountains. We've just been shopping in Thamel, bought ...
Kathmandu, Nepal chrisandem... went to a couple of the local sites. We went to Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Monkey temple and Bodhnath.
At Durbar Square we had a guide show us around all the temples. The most interesting thing we learnt was that the people worship a living godess who happens to be a 3 year old little girl!!! She is only aloud out of the temple three times a year and thats only for festivals. The funniest thing we ...
... On this point, one thing I have noticed since my last trek in these parts is the sudden appearance of empty plastic 'mineral' water bottles along the trails and in the streams. Whilst in the past trekkers have relied on stream water and iodine tincture people now seemed to be purchasing 'mineral' water in bulk. I put quotes around the word mineral because what people are buying is in fact tap water put through a filter and sold in a plastic bottle; a neat exercise in both ripping ...
