If there is one in the way, or at least a hill, they will remove it. ... move up the ladder and end up with really good jobs but no! They don’t have the connections. In China only if you have good connections can you progress. It’s that old saying, 'it’s not what you know but who you know that matters.’ Cathy also told me some further interesting but rather depressing information, at least if you are a Chinese. If you need your good connections to help you, you have to give them inducements but it doesn’t end there. ...

One of the primary reasons for this I think, is that the schools are afraid older teachers won’t be up to the job because of their age and might get sick. Of course this is not true, in fact older teachers are more likely to stick with China and not run home when it gets tough, as a lot of youngsters do, and also they are less likely to be trouble; not getting drunk and stupid. ...
