Daytrip to Szeged

Things really shut down in Europe on Sundays and Szeged was no exception. It's particularly bad in smaller towns when you're hungry and everything's closed...we felt like hobos, searching for food, and especially so when we stumbled across a Knorr van offering free soup-in-a-bun samples, and dove in!

Aside from closed shops though, there were certainly more pretty buildings, and even a lovely fountain to see!
The first day

... Szeged can get 40 degrees in the summer and stay like this. I hope it won't be like this for me. I booked a room with a view, atmosphere but more important - air condition. That's the view over Budapest. Beautiful. Look here - that's the train station. The train is called... Paprika :-) I love languages but Hungarian seems impossible to me ...

Cities of Vojvodina

... It is the administrative centre of the North Baèka District. The city serves as the cultural and political centre for the Hungarians, Bunjevci, and Croats in Vojvodina. The largest percent of declared Yugoslavs in Vojvodina could be also found in Subotica.

... liked to do was cook, so we ate well. We also bathed well, as Budapest has many hot springs, and we enjoyed a day at the Szechenyi Thermal Baths, which is a lavish indoor/outdoor set up with pools of varying temperatures, saunas and the like. I tried every pool out at least once, and went from broiling sauna to ice cold water a couple of times. It's quite possible my sperm count is now in single digits. From Budapest we went on to Pécs, which is a smaller city ...

Montenegro and Serbia

Staying with Montenegrin families has been a hit and miss affair with first impressions being misleading. In Budva we were greeted with a shot of clear liquor, the owner beaming at the grapes on the veranda in the yard. Home made grape schnapps at 11am! The couple in Sutomore were a lot more civilised and invited us around the kitchen table for coffee and biscuits. As much as i love an early drink, staying with a family who spends all day every day ...

A significant change of scenery

The last twenty-four hours have seen a fairly steady transition from the chaotic Orientalism of the southern Balkans. Traveling by train at long last - after weeks of hot, cramped buses - I got into Belgrade at about 9:00 this morning. The fact that it was an hour and a half late proved that I was still technically in the Balkans, but the atmosphere had already changed a fair deal. I didn't waste much time in Belgrade though, having the intention of coming back after seeing a little of ...

Appealingly ugly

Not having learnt from my previous experience, I thought it would be a good idea to break up my journey to Budapest and take in a couple of smaller towns along the way. My first stop was Art Nouveau inspired Subotica Forced to spend 6 hours here by the irritating scheduling of the trains, it really wasn't that much of a hardship, especially as the kind tourist info people looked after my bag for that time. The main streets of town, Engels street and ...
