We are on our third day in Chaing Mai. We left Bangkok (BKK) on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. on the night train, arriving here at 10:30 a.m. The trip was uneventful, we had lower berths, service was excellent and the train full of travellers from all over the world. Fortunately, the taxi driver who took us to our current wonderful hotel (Galare Guest House) was also a guide. He took us out for the whole day. The best part was going to see the elephants where David and I got to ride an elephant...
Chaing Mai, Thailand davidvalentineWe love Thailand. Thai people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. We had an interesting entry into Chiang Mai. Let me preface this by stating that I have an aversion to flying (Jamie and Sara C will appreciate this.) As we prepared for landing, Parker and I were eagerly looking out the window at the new sights (very different from Bangkok). I noticed that we were coming in a little hot (although I always think that when landing) and we had a sudden "crash" landing onto the runway. I braced...

Trully amazing.

Then, to our surprise, the Vice Governor was there watching the festivities with his family. He allowed us some time for one of our members to interview him about tourism. It's tough to follow a conversation that goes through an interpreter! It was ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand kitkatgo... were going to stay in Luang Prabang; after nearly forty-five minutes of fussing, we eventually settled on and booked one. This done, we headed east to the night bazaar. Our maps were deceptive because it took a good twenty minutes or more to finally reach it. We took the street a block south of Tha Pae gate on the east side of town, and after only walking for a minute realised that there was a not insignificant level of sleaze down this way. We saw a number of bars containing ...

Southwest, America West, and Frontier have nothin' on Bangkok Air. Also, even on short 1-hour hops, you get drinks, honey roasted nuts, and a chicken sandwich with cucumber and tomato. I wish flying ...

Chiang Mai, Thailand heledd... I also spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to stay for Buddhist New Year in Chiang Mai - one of the most famous places & therefore busiest & most hectic - or whether to move on. I had a couple of beers with a bar owner who said that I should definately stay in Chiang Mai because if you go to Laos they not only throw water but coloured dye... that made up my mind, get me on the next slowboat!
Chiang Mai, Thailand dolly_would...... milk soup (tom kaa kai). My soup was not too spicy and was really very tasty. I like it better than a soup with coconut. I prefer coconut as a dessert. I learned that the lemon grass, kaffir and galangal are meant to flavour the soup and are not to be eaten, so leave them in your bowl. Everything that we cooked, we ate as we went along. We were never hungry! While that was cooling Bill learned how to make fried noodles Thai style aka Pad Thai (phat Thai) with the ...
