Disappointingly tacky. The setting is very photogenic, but it's over-run with tourists. Tourists gawping at other tourists isn't my idea of a fun holiday.

Porto (or Oporto to some) is a must-see for visitors to Portugal, and our main reason for staying in Viseu was that it was fairly close to Porto. Up till now we'd been pleasantly distracted by the attractions at our doorstep, but we decided this would be the day that we'd drive the 130km to Porto. As already mentioned, the Portugese motorways are …
... 1 hour by train from Porto. The main attraction here is the Bom Jesus do Monte, a church from the 1600's perched on the hill high up above the town itself. The most stunning aspect of this church is the monumental stairway leading up to it from 116 metres below. Quite the hike up but a great view. Sadly the church was undergoing repairs when we visited so half of it was covered by scaffolding. Still the staircase itself was very impressive and ...
... of the group but when one of the singers, who also happened to be the restaurant owner, very politely asked them to please not talk so they complained and said they would leave unless she apologised. Luckily she didn't and they left soon afterwards (everybody else clapped) and we were treated to a memorable performance of male and female Fado and music. Of course we will now go on Trip Advisor and make sure we tell the whole story as we fully expect the group will post ...
... about book store that is said too have inspired the moving stair case. And it truly does, the way the stairs twist and turn you almost think they are moving. We learnt plenty of other fun facts about Porto. Soon after the tour we were indulging in a 'Francasenna' so, story behind this epic sandwich is a Frenchmen who came to Porto many years ago. The frenchy was supposedly a bit of a ladies man back in Paris, and turns out the woman of Portugal were not having any of it, ...
... hallways. The books are held in purpose built special wood and thick walls to protect them from the weather and insects (there are also bats that live in the library to protect the books!). We had a lovely lunch in the old time – bacalhau a bras, one of the many ways Portuguese cook their cod, this one fried with potatoes and egg. Delish! Finally we went past the very well preserved ruins of an old Roman town in Conimbriga with incredible mosaic.
