Disappointingly tacky. The setting is very photogenic, but it's over-run with tourists. Tourists gawping at other tourists isn't my idea of a fun holiday.

Porto (or Oporto to some) is a must-see for visitors to Portugal, and our main reason for staying in Viseu was that it was fairly close to Porto. Up till now we'd been pleasantly distracted by the attractions at our doorstep, but we decided this would be the day that we'd drive the 130km to Porto. As already mentioned, the Portugese motorways are …
... from our apartment! We listened to live music and got to chat with locals before calling it a night.
The next day we climbed to the top of Torre de Clerigos, more than 200 steps to see some spectacular views of the city. We also checked out São Francisco Church, which is made entirely out of gold, and saw the catacombs where the deceased people were placed on the floor underneath us (kinda creepy!). We say light please, but it always turns out to be a real meal- however the warmth and care is lovely, and because of our touring schedule, we so far end up eating lunch round 3 pm, and dinner round 9 pm, or later last night, and have to say that we are loving every minute of it all! So back to Thursday afternoon, ...
... lost 10-4 to these kids that were probably 7, 10, and 13. After that we went back to Piolho, the restaurant that we got the sandwiches at, to get some waffles. In Spain and Portugal (and maybe everywhere but the US?) gofres are a dessert, not breakfast. They usually come with hot fudge or chocolate sauce like Hershey's on top with whipped cream, and you can add ice cream for a little bit more. After the waffles we went back to the hostel to get some sleep.
... fireworks going off on the river. We heard that this was from the locals and they were celebrating something (not sure if it was religious, cultural, or what...) The fireworks were going off behind us, so we couldn't see them. Had we been on the other side of the river (by the wine caves), we could have seen them perfectly.
We had a long walk uphill to the metro station, but we got home safe and sound. Long day ended with sleeping in for our final morning in ...
