Disappointingly tacky. The setting is very photogenic, but it's over-run with tourists. Tourists gawping at other tourists isn't my idea of a fun holiday.

Porto (or Oporto to some) is a must-see for visitors to Portugal, and our main reason for staying in Viseu was that it was fairly close to Porto. Up till now we'd been pleasantly distracted by the attractions at our doorstep, but we decided this would be the day that we'd drive the 130km to Porto. ... along. Cabbed our way to the train station to catch our overnight train to San Sebastián. At this point, we were all tired and more tired. The connecting train to the sleeper train had us waiting for a few hours at a small train station with nothing but 2 or 3 small restaurants 200m or so away. ... a funky hat: drivers hats, safari hats, pandora hats, sun hats, racing hats...Pito liked the striped hats but turns out a striped hat with a striped shirt with striped shorts is too many stripes- who would of thought???!!! Portugal, or more specifically Porto, is famous for exporting Port from the nearby Douro valley. Many a time my family has been found knocking back a bottle of Tawny playing 500 on Christmas night, or any another big occasion for that matter, but I ...
... Porto (Freixo Palace Hotel), our riverfront home for the next two nights. It is one of the truly unique hotels in the world. The reception area, bar and dining area are in a manor house built in 1742! The hotel rooms are in an adjacent building that was originally a manufacturing plant. The original chimney for an kiln(?) still stands next as a symbol of the property. The 87 rooms are beautifully done; definitely a 5 star property and a great way ...
