... tower houses, it also holds a gelaterie that is in the book of Guinness World Records for best gelato so of course we had some of that too! Last on our agenda for the tour was Pisa, yes the Leaning Tower with all its tourists doing the cheesy "holding up the tower" photos but a must see and do – we got some good cheesy photos ourselves. Pisa has some other gorgeous buildings around the Leaning Tower so it was nice to ...

When in Rome

Tour day 12 Florence to Rome. Along the way we stopped in at the hilltop town of Orvieto to visit their cathedral. To get up to the town we took a short train ride. Attached to a cable the train was on tracks that were at a 45 degree angle, which was a novelty for me :) Yep, It's another church. Photos then lunch, not one of the better lunches I've had on tour. On to ...

... impressed with what we saw. It is, I believe, the single greatest work of art by one man. And remarkably that man didn't even consider himself a painter; he was a sculptor (a very gifted one at that and as it turns out also a great architect). It took Michelangelo 4 years to complete the painting of the ceiling -- backbreaking work that required him to ...

... such a privilege and honor to be standing below something so incredible.

Our tour ended, but we were able to visit the catacombs and St. Peter’s Basilica. The catacombs were cool. I saw the tomb of Pope John II and St. Peter. Next we went to the Basilica. We stayed at this hotel as we had a car and needed parking space, and were not keen to drive into the city of Rome. The hotel has great amenities, including the great coffee that can be purchased from the bar in the lobby. We found everything we needed, including a supermarket close by. The district is a fair way out of town, and on approach doesn't look the best, but give it a go, you will be pleasantly surprised. We were very pleased with the GP, and the breakfast buffet was pretty good too.
