There are only three reasons I can think (a) I look friendly or approachable (b) I look like I know what I am doing (c) Americans are just more likely to ask random strangers what to do and where to go. I will let you decide which (feel free to comment. Perhaps I should have a poll?) For me personally I think the only likely option is the last one!

    ... waited in line for 30 minutes last night and they had run out of my size so he must have felt sorry for me and he took me down to the merchandising counter where there was already a big queue but he just took me around the side and asked the guy to serve me first and luckily, they had replenished the stock and I got one, my lucky day.
