It's closer than you think

Ko-nnichi-wa....... I do believe that is around the 25th time I've learned to say 'Howdy' in another tongue.....this time a trip to Japan posed the challenge. I had to do what is known as a 'visa run' in the Teaching biz. For some reason in order to obtain a working visa in Korea you have to leave the country and visit a Korean embassy elsewhere. The closest place to get this done is in Fukuoka, Japan. ((For anyone stumbling across this looking for instructions on making a smooth run....check...

Lives in luggage, again.

... like? I have no friggin' idea. I've been trying to research it on the internet but have come up with very little as to what kind of life we'll be living there. Which is one of the reasons I've decided to revive the travel blog and maybe somewhere down the line, someone else is moving to Salalah and will actually have some idea of what it's like before they get there. Here's hoping it's good!

-M
"ROBOSQUARE!" (Robots in Japan!)

... with Hello Kitty ROBO. Pretty cute. But for the $1000 price tag I could buy a lot of 'cute' in the red light district!

Next, the AIBO collection caught my eye. Several generations of the lovable little robot dog by SONY were obediently seated on a matrix of shelves. If you've seen an AIBO it's probably been one of the futuristic looking shiny silver, black, or white ones. I was surprised to see a more "natural" looking beige pup from 2003, the AIBO ERS-311, but I ...

Won't You Take Me to Retro Town?

... Mojiko also became an important terminal for both the railroad and cruise ships. So it's full of Meiji-era Western-style buidings, mostly built in grand style between 1910 and 1920. The view of the waterfront and the bridge across the strait is just beautiful. There's a nice little railroad museum, a couple of small shopping plazas, and a new hotel with a striking modern design. I think Mojiko deserves everybody's ...

... thing is to pretend it doesn't exist. For example, at my hotel in Kyoto, the staff were very formal and polite when on duty. I happened to be in the lobby during hotel cleaning hours (at business hotels they want all the guests OUT between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and the staff put up a little screen between them and me. Behind the screen, they were talking loudly to each other, very different from how they acted while formally visible to ...

Fook yoo o ka

... the other stuff was!! But glad we did as it was the best noodle soup we have had all trip. Then we decided to be brave and order some other little bits - Rob ordered some chicken skewers, which although this is what it was, we had no idea what part of the chicken it was from as it was hard and crunchy!!!! Lesley then pointed at a few things that could not be identified but thought it might be ...

Fun stuffs about Japanese

I stayed a few days in this nice and modern city located on Japan southern island before taking a 6h ferry to Korea. To sum up I'd say: Good looking women and good food here. More info in pictures' comments.

Fun stuffs about Japanese and ideas:

1. They drive on the left side of the road. Can somebody explain? Fukuoka

... There were low hanging clouds, so the views were not always that good. The crater of the Naka-dake was very impressive with lots and lots of steam and its poisonous greenish-bluish lake. Away from this crater were some hiking trails and they were almost deserted - and that's the way I like it. I walked around for a few hours and took loads of pictures. It was very serene. Then it was time to take the last bus down. After Aso I took a few connecting trains to Usuki. In ...

... Port, but since I didn't know its Korean name, I had to find a driver that understood some English first. When I finally did, not only did the driver understand perfectly where I needed to go, but also exactly how to rip me off royally. About 35 minutes and W14,000 later I arrived at my destination (the cab on the way back was about 5 minutes and W1800). At least I didn't miss my boat. Waiting to board the Ferry, I met a fellow Canadian named Sarah that teaches ...

Invited to a private home in Fukuoka

... pretty much meaning, this is something small and not very special, as thanks for your hospitality. Usually it is given at the beginning, but I decided to choose the end of the day. They were all very surprised about this little formality of mine, and were laughing about my knowledge about Japanese custom. The present consisted of a small smoking man (Rauchermaennchen) representing a teacher. (Atsuko-san was my Japanese teacher in ...
