Day 115 We were now heading to Onomichi, the starting point for a cycle ride across six islands that we had decided to do. Along the way on the train it passed through Saijo, a famous sake brewing area so we had to stop. Unluckily for us, several were closed due to Golden Week (getting to hate those words!) but four were still open, so we set off walking with a map. The first brewery, Kamotsuru, had a video about the sake making process. It was in Japanese ...

Day 13 - rest day and some blogging

... the block and it appears to be a Yakitori place. We are seated immediately next to three young men in their late 20's or early 30's. They appear to be having a good time and I smile as we sit down saying "Hi." The food here has been awesome pretty much everywhere so I'm pretty certain no matter where we are or what time we arrive we ...

... is a speciality of the area. It reminded James of Benedictine. So, back to Island to brave the baths - luckily we could check in early too, so we went to our room to gather ourselves. The baths were bonkers. To cut a long story short they involved alternately crawling into human clay ovens, running into the freezing sea and soaking in some rather unclean-looking leaf-filled baths. The area itself looked like an unfinished worksite and there was a line ...

... all around (to be honest, still quite spooky but amazing too) - and then we followed the winding passage out into the sunlight to be faced with a 15ft statue of the Buddha of Mercy. - caught the ferry back to Mihara then the train to Fukuyama (where we're staying the night) from there WE ATE: Onomichi noodles: egg noodles in broth with slices of pork Fried octopus WE LOVED: - getting more remote - we've been pretty spoilt up until now ...
