Istanbul, Turkey orko... fishing boats ready to go out. We pass a lot of summer communities, still all closed and shuttered, on occasion we do see a car or two in their gated community. We keep wondering when they will open up. Some of the newer community houses have been painted very bright pastel colours and all have the terra cotta roofs. The countryside is green and it is so different from what we saw in Dubai, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and ...
Istanbul, Turkey dancejill... tree. And as well, across the moat blockading even the approach the front of the gate, a Muslim cemetery. Ah, the ironies of history!
Within the tower complex I began reading my newest book, the Byzantines by Averil Cameron.
The remainder of the afternoon I walked the half of the wall circuit, to the Topkapi Gate (which is about as far from Topkapi Sarayi as one can get. The still remaining mass of the wall is most impressive. Where formerly ...
... look at the menu, you will be hard pressed to escape. They are very friendly but also very pushy. I guess you would have to be to attract guests in an area that has so many restaurants. No big plans for the rest of the week. I think we are going to rest up for the weekend. Maybe a trip to the Egyptian spice market on the Golden Horn. Who knew being a movie star was so exhausting.
Istanbul, Turkey hrtravellers... us thankful we had nothing important to do on this pass through town. Well, we did hit a couple of museums we hadn't seen yet. It's too hard not to do something in a place like Istanbul. It's been a great journey. As always, some experiences were off the charts while some, admittedly, had me checking the calendar to see how many days we had left. It's always that way - if you're being honest with yourself. Heading to catch our flight in ...
Istanbul, Turkey jon_and_liz... ancient building. The gigantic medallions with Arabic calligraphy were quite unusual and contributed to the interesting atmosphere. After an hour at Aya Sofya, we decided to seek out the Spice bazaar so this meant a fair bit of trekking through town. We got lost along the way of course and a carpet salesman pounced immediately. What was most interesting was that after we told him that we were Australian, instead of asking ...
Istanbul, Turkey richandhel... Bourne Ultimatum scenes where Matt Damon makes his way to Tunisia. Without the proper robes, we would definitely feel out of place (I wonder if those colony outfits would suffice?). Either way, we simply didn't know what to expect and our adventure started to go to the bounds of the unknown. After passing through the normal channels of immigration, we first noticed how modern and clean the airport was. In comparison to Manila, this place was like being on the deck of ...
Istanbul, Turkey patandjill... and grew into a vast area as neighbopring shopkeepers decided to put up roofs and porches to ensure that business could be conducted no matter what the weather conditions were. Finally a system of locked gates and doors were erected so that the entire minicity could be closed up tight at the end of the business day. The banter from the local shopkeepers is as much the entertainment as walking the lanes. Shopkeepers are adept at speaking man y languages catering to ...
