A very quick flight to Iceland

After a very quick flight three hour flight to Reykjavik and a taxi ride into the city centre we were at our hotel. It was a nice hotel too so we booked it again for the last night of our trip.

We had a gentle wander around the main shopping area which was just outside of our hotel. A very surreal experience, the place seemed very small and the houses, such a range of styles, some made of wood, but many made of multicoloured metal sheeting.

Back to the beginning

Another bizarre night of dreams - dreams which have come from out of nowhere, this time it was school! Hemingbrough Primary where I started teaching, meeting back up with old pupils who hadn't aged a bit! I could even remember names that I thought I had forgotten - very strange! Think it may be part of the process of letting go of the UK. Up until now, I have been too tired to dream, so perhaps I am making up for it now!

Iceland 2009 Beginning I left Thursday morning from Lansing to Boston via Minneapolis. I had an award (free) ticket therefore the routing through Minneapolis. Due to the devaluation of the currency of Iceland the trip was not expensive: 335 € for the return-flight, four nights with breakfast in hotel "Fron" (which is stronly recommended) and transfer. Viking Dinner and Night out in Reykjavik

On Saturday night we went to the Viking House. There we had a great dinner and a very entertaining evening. Just a quick note... Reykjavik on a Saturday night is the most madness I have seen in a long time. The party starts around 11 pm and doesn't end until 6 or 7 in the morning... Of course I had to be in the middle of it!!!

Nice Choice for Reykjavik

Just spent three nights at Hotel Fron and found it to be a great choice. Room (double) was small, in typical European style with no desk space. But the hotel is in a great central location with much of the city within easy walking distance. Breakfast was nothing special for 770k, but several neary coffee and pastry shops offer good alternatives. Nearby supermarket is only a couple of blocks away. Restaurants and shopping are everywhere nearby. Wireless Internet worked well, but they do charge 550k daily for using it

This was our first visit to Reykjavik and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Biggest surprise -- and something none of the guidebooks we consulted made clear -- is how walkable and easy to navigate the city is. We took one of the organized city tours, which was a disappointment really -- we could have done better -- and did -- on our own.

Hotel Fron is a great option for your stay when exploring Reykjavik and Iceland.

Quiet but centrally located hotel

Have just spent 3 days at the hotel fron and thoroughly enjoyed them. The hotel is on the main street and near the centre of town, which was very convenient. The rooms are very clean and new and fairly spacious for a three star hotel. The shower was excellent but did have that sulphur smell common to most of Iceland. It was well worth paying the extra for a kitchenette as food prices are so expensive but there was only a frying pan and a saucepan - no kettle, although a coffee maker was provided including filter papers, there was also a microwave oven and hob and fridge with ice. The breakfast was basic, but adequate. It was easy to book trips with an agency a few doors down the road - open until 10 pm when we were there.

Great icelandic experience!

My husband and I were married in Iceland last year and we stayed at the Hotel Fron. We loved it - despite being on the "main shopping street" it was very quiet. The hotel was clean and well-decorated and the staff were very kind, helpful and reserved. Our room was one of the "studio apartments" and it came with a little kitchenette. Had we known in advance about Reykjavik restaurant prices we would have cooked for ourselves the entire time and saved tons of money- it is really amazingly expensive. We recommend that you skip the add-on hotel breakfast and cook for yourself (or go to the cafe a couple of doors down) - the cost really isn't worth it. The shower in the bathroom was wonderful, as I notice everyone else is commenting. Overall we loved the hotel and its wonderful location. Even in December in the "dark" there were still many things to do in the city. We absolutely loved Iceland and we plan to go back and stay at this hotel again.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Fron. Booked it through Icelandair Vacations. A bit expensive, but everything is in Iceland! We had a 2 room suite. The hotel has been recently renovated, so everything is nice and new. The free breakfast buffet was great. Free parking, too. Central location on the main street was also a benefit. I would definitely stay at the Hotel Fron again. My only criticism would be they need better curtains/ window treatments; the rooms have wooden venetian blinds - lots of light peeking through, especially since we were there during the "midnight sun."

I wore my sleep mask and was fine...besides, we were out sightseeing until 2am, so it was pretty easy to fall asleep!

We spent one unplanned night at the Hotel Fron, on our last night in Reykjavik. We got the room last minute, and liked it a lot. Especially nice was the on site parking in the middle of the city. Definitely a plus.

The Hotel is tucked behind the main shopping street in Reykjavik, and encompasses a few buildings, from what we could tell. The reception desk was professional and efficient. Our room was located on the third floor in the front of the building, with a little balcony overlooking the main street. Quite nice. The decor was clean and simple, and the bathroom was great. Nice warm powerful shower, with none of the Iceland sulfur water smell. We also had a small kitchen to prepare breakfast in the morning.

The french doors to the balcony and two tiny windows were covered by wooden blinds, which might be a problem if you are there during the summer when there is no darkness at night. Also, being on the main shipping/dining street, I think weekends might be a little loud, but we had no problems, since the street consists of a tiny, winding, one-lane road, and it was a weekday.

If you're looking for simple, clean accommodations in the heart of Reykjavik, this is a great place to stay. Very reflective of modern Scandinavia, very affordable, very stylish.

Great Place, Particularly at Off-Season Rates

We stayed at this hotel on either end of a week long vacation. The first stay was on out of season rates and we couldn't get over how nice our spacious, clean studio apartment was. It was a real plus to have the kitchen so that we could have lunch at home and save a bit for the dinner out at a restaurant. Of note, we are hardly self-catering tourists under normal circumstances but in Iceland you have to cut corners a bit to save money that you want to use for activities like glacier snowmobiling and the like. When we stayed at the end of our trip again the room was nice, but the in-season rates were much higher and changed the value equation a bit. Overall, I would recommend Hotel Fron, it has a great location (right on the main shopping / eating street) and if you have a room in the back its very quiet.

I stayed in one of their 1 bedroom apartments. It comes to $140/night which is pretty cheap if you are travelling with another person.

the rooms are very clean. the mini bar is actually reasonably priced. and it is so close to the bars (Sirkus, Kaffi Barrin). you cant really top the location.

the breakfast is basic but who cares. go to a cafe.

We couldn't have picked a better hotel, the Hotel Fron is situated right in the middle of the main street that runs through Reykjavik. This is an excellent location for bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and the tourist information centre. We stayed in an appartment in the annex that had a kitchenette (inc. fridge and microwave), good size bathroom with hot shower, bedroom and lounge area. The central heating was really good and controllable. We didn't bother with the breakfast that the hotel provided for an extra £8 a day, instead we visited a lovely bakery 2 mins up the street from the hotel that sold great croissants and sandwiches. The reception staff were really helpful and the overall cost was reasonable. Fully recommend doing some excursions; going up a glacier, snowmobiling and the blue lagoon.

To and Fron!

Following a recommendation, my partner and I went to Iceland in November 2004 in order to see the Northern Lights. The weather was pretty terrible but the guides on the tours were excellent. We stayed at the Hotel Fron, which is located on the main shopping street of Reykjavik (Laugavegur - pardon my icelandic!). This hotel is definetely a hidden gem. Unassuming from the outside and with a small reception onto the main street, once inside it is spacious and has many rooms. It felt more like a hotel for people in the know (i.e. majority of scandinavian tourists). It certainly does not have all of the features of bigger hotels such as swimming pools and gyms, etc but we didn't feel the point of paying for these anyhow as Iceland is a country to be explored in the outdoors. We cannot comment on the quality of the breakfast since the room was being refurbished and we received vouchers of the adjacent cafe. As for the rooms, we opted for a 1-bed apartment (Room 412) which was spacious, very quiet and had a lovely warm shower. The living room included an electric hob, microwave and fridge. This was very useful as we cooked a couple of evening meals in order to cut down on costs of restaurants. Overall, highly recommended hotel in great location with non of the rip-off prices.

Nice hotel great location

We stayed at this very modern 3 star hotel from 4 June to 6 June 2004. Our room in the main building on the top 4th floor was very pleasant and had a balcony albeit one that other guests have access to as well - some rooms have their front doors across the balcony as well but this caused us no disturbance. The room was light and bright and stylishly fitted with wooden floor, wooden venetian style blinds (no curtains) which tried to keep the midnight sun out and nice photographs on the walls. Beds are very comfortable. Bathroom was small with shower only, but clean with, importantly for me, a radiator that you can control yourself! Bring shower caps if you require one as none is provided. Icelandic tip: always turn on the water towards cool first as the hot will be boiling due to the natural geothermals!

There was a fridge in our room and some dishes and cutlery but not the promised microwave but it didn't matter to us anyway - some rooms have a small kitchen area and these seemed to be in the separate annexe building. The hotel staff were very friendly and all spoke good English.

The only downside to this hotel was that some other guests suffered with noise from the next door night club - apparently the noise penetrated the walls in their room which was nextdoor to the bar and the music does go on until 5.30am the next morning. The people concerned complained and were moved to the annexe which was much quieter. I have to say on our 2nd night I could hear the faint sound of music thumping - yes you guessed until 5.30 am. So if you book this hotel ask for a room in the annexe if you want a guaranteed quiet night. I would definitely stay here again - subject to a quiet room being had - due to the convenience of the hotel being so well placed for everything in the centre of town.

Breakfast was served in a rather cramped but bright room in the annexe and it was adequate but DIY - sliced brown/white bread is available with a toaster for you to toast yourself which means you do get it hot, there was jam, meat and cheese, cornflakes were the only cereal on offer, yoghurt and some small pieces of fresh fruit - remember this IS Iceland - orange juice, a variety of tea bags and coffee.

The town centre, shops, sea front and Tjornin Lake are just a few minutes walk from the hotel and there are plenty of places to eat. We had a tourist menu meal at the restaurant overlooking Tjornin Lake and this was very nice and included traditional Icelandic ingredients - cured lamb, fish (!) and skyr. You can book day trips at the tourist information office 2 minutes walk from the hotel and the day trip people collect you from your hotel in the morning and take you to a central meeting point to catch your tour bus - it is a very slick operation! We booked the South Shore Adventure operated by Reykjavik Excursions and it was excellent. The airport buses run frequently and call at the hotel I believe. One final thing to note is that tipping is NOT the norm in Iceland and even taxi drivers don't expect tips.
