Kladissos Chania, Crete, Greece, 73100
Sunday was a rest day to recover from the very late night and the pressures of driving with the Cretans – a competitive sport with few rules. We wandered along the beach and poked round the shops, finding new treats, such as baklava, a honey and pastry dessert that Chris is addicted to. Like Elton John and cocaine, Chris can not go to sleep if he knows there are the remnants of any baklava left in the room. He was devastated to find ...
Chania, Crete, Greece kevino101... seemed to be 60km/h, but the traffic flow was generally double that, so we moved as far right as possible and let everyone pass, whether in no-passing areas or on blind bends. After about an hour, as we drove beyond Rethymno we could see another road to seaward where we reckoned Platanes should be, but could not find a way to get to it. The instructions from RCI were from Iraklio and mentioned a village called Scalletta. We found that ...
Chania, Crete, Greece kevino101... I have been most excited about.
The Samaria Gorge is the longest natural gorge in Europe (9 miles, I think?) before ending at the ocean on the southern coast of Crete. It felt like longer than that, but perhaps that was because of the rocky terrain, which kept our eyes firmly on the ground as we descended from the top of the mountain to the level part of the gorge. The hike was absolutely gorgeous--gorges (we're hilarious...). Taking the 7:30am bus was ...
We ended up taking a bus to a town called Rethmynos to see this big old fortress with a mosque and a church within it, overlooking the water. It was interesting enough, but then we headed to the main part of town, which our "trusty" Lonely Planet had referred to as the second most charming city in Crete. I can only come to the conclusion that Crete is full of some **** cities. It was a weird ghost town full of ...

... represented. I think the dinner was a smashing success, as several students asked me later if we would be having similar entertainment fund dinners on our future excursions to the Peloponnese and Delphi. Many of the students left dinner and proceeded to the clubs, where the Chanians were more than happy to dance well before 3AM. I, on the other hand, walked along the stunning Chania harbor with Basil looking at the shops and the water.

A mix of chocolate, cherry and banana as I taste my icecream. We arrived at Kissamos today and we treated ourselves on a well deserved treat. We are sitting on the main square shaded from the sun by big palm leaved parasols while the crickets make as much noise as possible so we don't forget them either. Now and then a car passes or a woman walking her dog. It's ...
