Tokyo Fish Market

... were about 300 men in the auction area, examining and bidding on flash-frozen tuna carcasses.  The tuna were huge -each one was larger  than our eight-year-old son- and there were hundreds, maybe thousands, being displayed, sold, sawn up, and carted around.  For the remainder of this post, please see www.changeinplans.net30 October 2008

On our way home

... more skill than I would have guessed from playing in the basement. For those of you interested in hearing about the club scene in Beijing, I'm afraid that my experience was a bit skewed. I went out Friday night with a fun group - a mix of another swimmer's girlfriend and friends, and a friend of a friend from work (plus a few of his friends that are studying in Beijing for the year). We ended up at Club Bud...and while we weren't exactly on the list, slipped ...

And so it begins

... to Navigate this system?????Lots of people...all using their phones, PSP:s on the subway. I bought a Passimo pass so that I don:t have to think about how to use the system. Finally around 4 we got off the various subway connections to Emi:s house and started to walk. I was quite afraid that if I don:t remember where I`m coming from how can I get there! But getting to her place is actually easy. Its quite smoggy here and humid as well. I met her mom Momojun who speaks no english so I ...

Hectic days in Tokyo

... see the Imperial Palace, but you can walk the palace grounds. Very nice gardens, not the best I have seen in Japan, but a nice walk nevertheless. Highlight of the day was visiting the Japanese head quarter of Games Workshop; I had a tour by Paul Dobson the GM of GW Japan, and got to see maybe the most tightly run Games Workshop company I have seen. Here there were no fancy offices, and everything was recycled if possible. We also had a very ...

... from across the street. To our credit it was a Japanese burger place, not McDonalds. And they were actually quite good. After that we walked deeper into our neighborhood than we had before. Things found on this trip: *GIANT department store OIOI or 0101... Beautiful store, but lacking in the cool food court idea that the other stores have. *A Mexican restaurant... we had a peak. they serve guacamore... enough said. *A Karaoke bar that serves this French Toast dessert thing. It ...

Day 2 in Tokyo

... started to rain, all the boys got their brollies out and looked like right pansies! We found a massive shopping center with about 14 floors and it had a whole floor dedicated to stationary!!!!!! As you can imagine i bought a few things...... We must have walked miles and miles around Shinjuku and ended up getting very lost as the train station is massive, with countless exits. At around 5, we left for Shibuya for meet Celica for dinner.....

Industry Meets Inspiration In Tokyo

... the view of Mount Fuji in the early hours of dawn. This is possible from within the city, atop one of the massive skyscrapers such as the Government Building in Shinjuku. Directly in the center of Tokyo, the Imperial Palace (Kokyo) is an inner-city sanctuary that is home to the Imperial Family. The public can visit the surrounding East Gardens and walk along the double bridge over the tranquil moats of the palace ...

Two weeks and a rail pass in Japan

... for everyone to get on and the train is away. However for trains leaving Tokyo, the cleaners waited. They looked very serious and would queue horizontally along the platform on a place marked by an arrow, wearing beautifully pressed, pale pink uniforms. They boarded and in just a few minutes' race down the coach had cleaned every surface and replaced the seat head covers. When the train conductor enters the ...

Welcome to Japan

... area. The first lesson you'll learn in Japan is to ask. Someone always has the answer. It wasn't long before we found our way to the shinkansen line that would spirit us out of Tokyo and on toward our ultimate destination of Kyoto. Some minor confusion over the signs was quickly cleared up, and before too long we were on the JR Tokaido line on our way. Pulling out of Tokyo was much like pulling in, only in reverse of course. Towering downtown chaos became expansive ...
