Shenzhen, Guangdong, China cccold... the lil one from Nemo) in the gardens. In Kowloon streets, we were overcome by the smells of the medicine outlets, with giant trays of dried seafood and other mysterious (?mushrooms? pig knuckles) things... We experienced the 'drip' - ie drops of water falling from all the aircon machines and tried our best to avoid it. We were constantly approached by "touts" - people on street offering suits, watches, knock off handbags, massage and pretty much everything inbetween. Dani began by ...
Kowloon, Hong Kong dan-and-dee... rather than just off the coast of China. Day 1 was spent mainly in the laundry room and admiring the view until my friend got back from her job as a nanny at 6 and we headed to a fantastic restaurant called the China club which resembled what I'd imagined HongKong in in the 1920s to be like, we watched tea being poured in every which way and how they made chinese noodles and then sat down to a fantastic meal which included a ...
Hong Kong, China ditzyali... play before and after each place we visit; the idea is to, before we arrive, choose 3 words that we think will best describe the place and then evaluate those 3 words after we have left. So from now on, we will start each blog with the 3 words from the both of us and end the blog with our 3 're-evaluated words'.

I didn't play the 3 word game as I had been to Hong Kong before, but these were Jo's:

Before: Clean, Busy and Westernised

After: Hot, (very) Busy and International
Hong Kong, China alexjo... a Thai Restaurant on Hong Kong and had 3 curries which were 100% on the previous day - but still not equal to anything you would get in Thailand. But still the kids were happy with the tucker and the service was first rate. We headed back to the hotel and the kids played with some electronic toys that I bought them from the 'Peak' - a remote control helicopter and car that climbs up the wall...of course I only had a few goes of the car and ...
Hong Kong, China masonsineurope... in Central which had some nice looking bars and restaurants, we wandered through some antique markets and also visited the Temple St Night Market from which we managed to buy a few presents/souvenirs. We visited Man Mo Temple which was very beautiful and had lots of coils of incense hanging from the ceiling (which meant us Westerners had to watch our heads!). After a great 10 days we had to leave Hong Kong, so while the parents went to England we went to Hanoi in Vietnam.
Hong Kong, Hong Kong chrisharrison... what happened and there is no way the story would translate in any logical way so I'll leave the pictures to explain the rest. When we got down to lets say a less steep part of the peak we were able to flag down a cab. We thought we had settled on a 50 dollar ride back to the hostel. We get there and the cabbie upped the price to almost $60. We basically said no, we agreed to 50 so that's what he was gonna get. So instead of taking the money, he takes the 50 ...
Hong Kong, China rosemichelle... er da eigentlich, ist er besoffen?" - sollte einfach mal kurz ins Gästebuch schauen. Heute dann mal wieder Putonghua. Was habe ich heute gelernt? Hmm, dass jemand im Büro ist und nicht im Klassenraum und wie man Fragen stellt. Ganz, ganz langsam geht es in die Richtung, dass man auch im täglichen Leben leidlich über die Runden kommen könnte - wenn die Einheimischen die Sprache sprächen. Allerdings ist's für mich ja so, als würde ich in den ...
Hong Kong, Hong Kong rinneaufreisen... lovely lunch of chickens feet and noodles for lunch. Intriguing. Said goodbye to Jack and met with Quen, a guy studying at the uuniveristy in Shenzhen who was to give us our tickets and show us to the train. Eventually got on the train in our hard sleep compartment, 6 beds, 2 lower, 2 middle and 2 upper, we had 2 uppers in one compartment and one upper in the one next door. Surprisingly comfy, and they damn well should be for the 16 hour trip to Guillin ahead!
Shenzhen, Guangdong, China nick114... low-paid, relatively low skilled jobs for which they have little apparent inclination or training. This is particularly striking when you encounter someone with soft skills that would be snapped up in London, New York or Paris with rich compensation to boot. Here, there are smart people going unused. It begs the question as to what would or will happen if and when the ...
