Fraser Island is a common stop on the tourist trail down the East coast - the island is the largest sand island in the world (I think) and home to some beautiful fresh water lagoons and creeks, native dingoes, fantastic rainforest (growing on sand) and a 75 mile beach to the Pacific Ocean on the East side.<br><br>We were picked up in our green machine (as it turns out not a patch on Jucy Lucy!) - a 16 seater 4WD bus - early on Wednesday morning and met our guide for the two ...

... takes off from the beach and this was great as not only did I get the living daylights scared out of me by the pilot doing a few light aerobatics (sharp turns and dips to get all the girls in the plane screeching) but I was also able to see clearly both sides of the island, some of the bigger dunes and inland lakes and the long trails of yellow sand suspended in the waters off Fraser Island as they travel along and slowly move the island millimeters down ...

... lumps and bumps and markings, and as they went under the boat we got an amazing view of their tails. A few minutes later they were at the front of the boat and swam right alongside us to give us another glimpse of them up close. Those few moments made our whole day, everyone was grinning from ear to ear and felt so lucky to be experience such a sight. As I&#8217;m sitting here writing this and eating dinner in the hostel hours later I&#8217;m still smiling, things are finally starting to look up.
