... around so I'll just have to see how long before the steering gets heavy again.

I ride over the Colle della Maddalena at 2000m, then into France and down the L'Ubaye river valley into Jaussiers. I see a sign for Colle de la Bonette, the highest paved through road in the Alps. I have heard about this one but didn't realise I was so close to it. The summit is just 23km ...

... you that I don't like tunnels. Not the little rocky French ones, I mean the long, smelly burrows that go for miles in places under the alps and are usually full of aggressive Italian drivers.

But I'm not complaining about them today. Driving past Genoa on the autostrada one goes through maybe a hundred tunnels. Every one is a respite from the driving rain and the chance to sit up straight ...

After an amazing stay in the Le Grand Hotel with the bike safely stored in the garage I set off early with no breakfast or coffee which is unusual. It's fair to say the town of Barcelonnette in France left a good impression on me. An old city but with a vibrance and not too touristy. I was keen to ride the highest road ...

... the next day - nice. Sometimes it the places you go to by mistake and the people you meet on the journey that make a trip into an Adventure, such was today. Over dinner I got talking to an English speaking couple from Singapore (yes after a few days of my broken French...). They gave me a definite location to visit tomorrow only a few km east of here - Col de la Bonette - 2802 m. More tomorrow as deep sleep calls...another great day just gets better and better of that is at all ...

... out to find my bike. After a direct 15 minute walk, I made it to the bike shop, where they provided me with my bike and equipment. After this I headed out to the mountains. After riding, say 10 km out of town, I began my actual ride. This took me on a beautiful 20 km bike route by the river, through small farm towns and fields.
Let me stop for a minute to clarify something I didn't know when I started. I thought I was going to ...
