... Rule - since his was more privileged than most. Now we have three days at sea as we head for Recife, Brazil. We are scheduled to cross the equator precisely at midnight on December 11th. Ocean temperatures are running around 86 degrees F. - not that we will be swimming in the Ocean anytime soon - air temperatures are in the low 80's during the day and the seas have 1 - 4 foot swells - so hardly any movement at all.

... and was very proud of myself. Somehow, I think the local people half-expected to bargain. Most foodstuff are generally expensive for the local living standards...almost the same or more expensive than in France...perhaps it's because everything is imported here....not much fertile land for agriculture. Only seafood remains inexpensive.. 3 EUR for a medium size red snapper! Here are more photos of the city. Enjoy!

Arrival in Cape Verde

... up with the cousins of Michael and Jennis, the american couple I met in Barcelona by chance, yesterday at the marina. I thought I recognised the name of their catamaran, SCUD. It was a nice surprise to meet them here. They left this morning for the Carribean. We will be leaving tomorrow for Barbados. Till then, keep a lookout on this blog! The voyage is expected to last at least 20 days, if we're lucky enough to have winds of 5 miles per hour everyday.

On devrait jeter l'encre vers 3h.

... so far...the first time, Greg let it escape by mistake. The 2nd time, we decided that it was too ugly to eat it so we put it back into the water. Talk about saved by the skin! The 3rd time, we found it at the end of the line too late...it was all disfigured by the time we pull it up. We threw it back into the water. In an attempt to improve our chances of catching a fish, Phil added a weight from his diving equipment to the line. At around 4 pm, Eddy noticed that we had something on ...

... while Eddy turned on the engine to sail back to Phil, while I stayed a lookout for him since he had let go of the rope. The sails were abruptly brought down to slow down our speed. When we finally got him out of the water, he was all shaken. He told us that he had trouble breathing with the waves coming into him all the time. It was so bad the waves took his shorts away! We had a round of a beer to calm us down and to celebrate the fact that there are still 4 of us on the boat.

... though their boat is almost the same size as us. We let them pass behind us and soon they disappeared into the horizon. We put up the other pole to support the bottom of the genoa and turned on the engine to catch up. We haven't seen them since. We soon arrived into the Trade winds zone and were soon sailing at around 5-6 knotts.

... we were treated to tribal dance of dolphins in the horizon. There must have been around 30 of them, one leaping after the other. They reminded me of the scene in Lion King, where all the animals gathered to meet their new king. I quietly wished for them to approach, but they didn't. 10 minutes before my night shift, Eddy woke me up to alert me of the dolphins. There were maybe 2-3 of them. Streaks of green line criss-crossing decorated the sides of the boat.

Departure fr Arguineguin / Depart d'Arguineguin

... for 3-4 hours. We had the motor on for a bit...but when we stopped, we couldn't stop rocking. For dinner, we had rice with potatoes and tomato soup....everyone had little appetite, except Phillip. Night watch was rather uneventful, but it was nice to see planktons glowing around the boat as we cut through the water. The sky was clear and filled with stars all around. We must have caught sight of a couple of shooting stars.
