Frances, Edna and I were all flirting like mad but he loaned me his sun glasses hee hee. Great phots so we will bore you to death with them when we get back. This afternoon the ...

... you have to walk everywhere. It was 5 km to the start of the trail that led to the glacier, so I had to walk that first before even starting the "real" hike. The trail led to the glacier's terminal point, but it was roped off with signs posted that you were not to go beyond certain points without a guide. I met Amelie coming back as I was going down the trail, and we stopped to talk for a minute. The trail offered some great views of the ...

The South Island - Hokitika to Fox Glacier

... we were so tired we stayed in Fox again, had a gourmet dinner of chicken noodles and an early night.

The next morning we went to Lake Matheson, one of the most famous panorama's in New Zealand, as it reflects the view of Mount Cook and Fox Glacier on its calm waters like a mirror. It was an impressive sight, but the grey sky and clouds made it hard to get a clear view of the mountains unfortunately. Nevermind, at least it had stopped raining!

Franz josef Day 47 and 48

Day 47

Today we arrived at Franz Josef. Where we were staying we were in an amazing place, surrounded by the glaciers and Franz Josef Glacier. They were phenominal to look at, stunning. Lisa made me a spagetti carbanara, which was awesome (although not as good as yours mum!!) and then we chilled out watching Braveheart in the evening and met up with James, Lloyd and their friends and chilled out. I got an early night in preparation for the ...

The Glaciers

... earlier the face of the glacier had been at the point we were standing on - who says global warming is a myth?

The following day I got up early and teamed up with my new ice-climbing buddies - two lads from Grimsby in their early 20's and a German girl of a similar age. One of the lads kindly told me he never would have guessed that I was anywhere near 40 and hoped he too would be able to get out and about when he was that age! Cheeky little..... I told him Grimsby smelt ...

We fed a deer, met our first marsupial and Eric learnt what a goat looks like –he kept confusing them with alpacas.

The bus rides are not all that bad; they provide hours of much needed relaxation and reveal undeniably gorgeous scenery. ... bed running down from the glacier. She was pointing out lots of geological points of interest, such as the glacial striations along the way.
The glacier itself at the moment is advancing and can move up to a metre a day, which is pretty crazy fast. It is 15 kilometres long and is formed in a kind of snow-basin between three peaks, Mount Tasman, Mount Cook and Mount Douglas. The snow collects in the ...

New Zealand Lives up to my Dream

... The weather closed in and it poured but I did a couple of good walks despite not being able to see much. Firstly to the glacier although I didn't go right up to it, you couldn't see much the weather was so bad. I did climb up the very steep path to a viewpoint, despite the weather that was worth the exercise. I gave up then, a cosy supper and catch up on emails.

Next morning I had a decision to make - a five hour walk to and on the ...
