Main Road, SH6 - Westland World Heritage Park, Fox Glacier Fox Glacier, Westland National Park, South Island, New Zealand, 3-751-0839
Today we switch coach lines (Newmans) and head off for the Fox Glacier and the Southern Alps. We travel through vineyards and fruit orchards, and eventually through high country sheep ranches. We are heading to Westland, and going through rainforest (and yes it does continue to rain for us; aren't they suppose to be having a drought here). This morning the scenery is lush and green and misty, it reminds me of a scene out of "Gorillas in the Mist". We also travel through windswept sandy areas,...

i drove from omaru to mt cook in the morning stopping at the elephant rocks on the way, they looked nothing like elephants then i stopped in twizel for lunch. i arrived in mt cook early afternoon and decided to go on a short walk round the governers bush, it was meant to take an hour but after 30 minutes i had finished, at the end of the track the red tarns walk started and was signed as 2 hours, i read in my guide book and it said it was a short and achievable walk with ...
Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand ctompkins11... carving and nice pieces. Headed to the Franz Josef glacier and hiked up to the face. Took a side path and got some amazing higher ground views. Saw some really cool bold parrots(Kea) in the parking lot. Drove south to Fox glacier and camped close to matheson lake.
Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand martyd83... profession was as a university lecturer – I pity his students. One of the stops had been the Otago Settlers Museum which I went back to for a better look. I particularly liked the section that had photos and portraits of the early settlers – what a dour miserable bunch they looked, not a speck of colour in any of the portraits – definitely Free Presbyterians but it is amazing how much they achieved so much in a relatively short time. And so from ...

We didn't hang around.
The tunnel we had emerged from was completed in 1953 making the Sound accessible for the first time to the rest of the island.
Milford Sound was a serene wilderness. The waters perfectly still and distant waterfalls the only sound. A reward indeed for our long one way journey.

Satisfied with the wonder of nature here, we headed back and ...
Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand paulngailHokitika

As we left Greymouth, the heaven's opened and the rain came. Lots of rain! Now when you're travelling with little to no money, you often find yourselves going on walks, to get to know an area because you can't afford to do any of the other activities on offer. This was a common occurrence for us in New Zealand. When we got to Hokitika, a town on the west coast famous for its production of greenstone or jade as you may know it ...
Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand corinneandluke... aboot most of the day, doing things that needed to be done (yes i still have ''things to do" when traveling just different things perhaps) and chilling, enjoying it all very much so..i mean i am here to relax as well. I did go for a 2 hr walk up to a viewpoint. There are loads of independent walks right close by, ranging from whole day to half hour walks. It was really nice to be walking alone along the river then amongst nature ...

Even
