Just a note to say that i've added a few extra pictures that were missing from the last blog... Plus i've just remembered that there are some more that didn't make it that i'll put on next time!! Friday 20th February Wellington to Napier - Art Deco Weekend Woke up to pouring rain... Took a slow drive out of town along highway 1, then onto highway 2 via 57.. The visibility was really bad so there wasn't anything to look at. We made Napier at about 3.0 and after a short wait, checked in to the ...

DUBAI! Like Vegas, only WAY more expensive.
The cheapest hotel within 5 miles of the Dubai Airport? $550 a night! The minibar might as well be a safe. The airport terminal is like a gleeming, brilliantly lit movie set. Dubai is home of the world's best hotel, the Barq el Arab, the only 5 star hotel anywhere. Brunch is $150, plus drinks, even alchohol! I managed to crash ...
Dubai, Dubayy, United Arab Emirates austinairwavesA shift was noticed in the marketing strategy used by hotels in the Gulf region particularly in Dubai, with more and more hotels turning to the popular social networking sites to attract more guests.

This shows the huge potential these ...
Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates dsektops... there were "Ramadan Kareem" signs on store windows and Ramadan sales/discounts, but it wasn’t as widespread or materialistic as Christmas seems to be now.

I sat down in what would normally be a café area and, as luck would have it, had a power outlet right next to me. I also got a free wireless connection---woo hoo! I sent a few more emails and booked my cars for Oman (car at first, then 4WD) since I didn’t want to rely on ...
Dubai, United Arab Emirates bohemianbadger... three pilots and I made four people, all that could fit in the cockpit. I went back to my seat and had breakfast with Liz and about an hour later we were joined by Julian! It was such a thrill to have someone in a pilots uniform come down the plane and sit with us and he had his breakfast with us, quite a superior spread to ours I might add. When he returned to the cockpit I was invited back to the ...

Somehow, the just didn't get the logic of why I wouldn't want a hotel room in Dubai during the day with an early morning departure. They could not understand that sleeping was at night in a bed and not on a plane. I did convince them to fly me to London. No problem getting a hotel at the airport. Now I just have to convince them to pay for it.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates nahury1... What made things more difficult for me was that I barely had any credits left on my Qatar mobile and I couldn't buy any credits in Dubai. This made my communication efforts more difficult as I had a very limited amount of minutes left. I head back to the hotel and come to accept that I'm going to miss my flight. I finally got a call from her but at this point it was way too late. She was sleeping. It was a stupid mistake on my part, I quickly realized that. Have you ...
Dubai, United Arab Emirates jacoba... and was treated by how i looked, like i had nothing. Granted I looked a little hippyish and scruffy as I came through customs but I didn't expect the treatment i received. I was pulled into a little room, had my passport removed, asked loads of weird questions about where I had been and where i was going, had the small bag i had on me rifled through and had my 'person' checked. I will leave how that went down to your ...
Dubai, United Arab Emirates freetime... be really impressed with the current ruler so I guess there is a grand plan - the grander the better by the looks of it. Petrol is of course ridiculously cheap! There are some interesting names in these parts - Mr fixit in the consulate is called Afaq, there is sign for DR Faqi -an OBGYN doctor, and our driver in Libya was called Fati - you have to remember that the 'a' in this part of the world is pronounced ah (as in far) not a (as in cat). It can take ...

All this was just us trying to get on to Sheikh Zayed Road...and when we crossed Sheikh Zayed, they missed the turnoff--so we took an alternate route (this time, under my direction), and I got back an hour and a half ...
