650 Laugar Myvatn, Iceland, 650, 354-464-6300

All of Iceland is shaped by three forces: vulcanization, glaciation and erosion. There are still several quite active volcanoes on the island, and they say that one of the larger ones is due for an eruption again in 2010 or so.
Some of the volcanoes are actually covered over by 200 meters of glacier. One of those erupted in 1996 creating a huge meltwater lake under the glacier that eventually burst out under the ice ...

Myvatn, Iceland jpbigan... we decided to move on and Jack would come back later when the light was better to take some photos. We stopped at Skútustaðir which is on the south shore of the lake. There is a trail there that meanders through an area of 'pseudo craters'.

These craters are formed by steam explosions when burning lava meets lakes or wetlands. We walked the trail and saw a few birds as well ...
Myvatn, Iceland margreet98
We have been married 10 days! Wow! Married! Crazy! We are driving around Myvatn in the northeast of the country. There are craters everywhere. Reminents of volcanoes. What would we do if one erupted? Is there a procedure? There are big black jagged rocks everywhere. Yesterday we passed the steaming fissures and bubbling mud pots. Blue mud burped and puddled in oily brown residue. These pots had caked and cracked walls and were ...
Reykjahlid, Iceland pilar.aparicio... and potato. A vast improvement on the airport sandwich. Obviously the food is a bid concern as several of the other girls have brought huge stashes of food -- including a cooler with salad and veg! The lake looks huge and the thought of walking around it seems daunting. Should have brough an inflatable kayak so we could bug out half way if need be. Not sure about the midge ...
Myvatn, Iceland nicole.duncan... keeping mask. I really struggle to keep a straight face when I see all these people walking with bee keeping masks and their expensive walking poles because they look like astronauts in this landscape. .....by the way, what on earth are walking poles for???? - they seem like expensive accessories with no actual use. Oh, before I finish off here I must mention Krafla. It´s a volcano with lots of sulphur deposits ...
Myvatn, Iceland susan_gDay 7: July 13, 2007 Námasfjall Hverir and Krafla I slept well but not like the previous night. After breakfast, we loaded up and headed over to Namasfjall Hverir under overcast skies. The geothermal field was as active as ever. We toured it in a clockwise direction before climbing the mid-ocean ridge on the trail by the road. Although it was slippery in places it is a much easier climb than the trail to the south of the ...
Reykjahlið, Iceland magellanic... to the descent trail and met Bill on the way. He had walked with Shirl to the bus and then climbed the volcano on the northwest trail. We descended by that trail to the bus. Only Motley and Curt decided to hike back to camp. We got back around 4:00. By 6:00, we realized that Motley and Curt were two of the evening's cooks. By 8 ...
