We had reserved an AC 3 sleeper aboard the Punjab Mail express between Delhi and Bombay. This meant that we would be sleeping in a 3-tier air-conditioned car with a total of 6 people in our section of the rail car. The top bunk stayed in place, while the back-rest of the bench folded up to become a bunk, and the seat was used as a bunk as well. Because the air conditioning made the car quite ...
Mumbai (Bombay), Maharashtra, India sponger42... The people were friendly, few touts, cheap prices, no tourist shops, little littering. There is an old palace with many people actively working to improve the ruins and it was nice to just wander the ruins. I got some exercise walking to the other end of the old fort meeting many people along the way, with the boys playing a game with a longer and smaller stick. They hit the small stick with the larger making it bounce from ...

Make one minor error but 40 minutes later I'm there. Get asked by 243 people (it could have been more) if I want to buy something or "what is your name". Tell 221 no and 22 Ken. Mistake! I'm in a conversation. Now those who asked my name want me to buy something. I didn't. From now on I'm going to be from Iceland and dumb. Make my way to the Taj ...
indore, madhya pradesh, India kenherr... to get into the mosque. "Nothing, itīs free", we said, "except for your camera... you pay 200 rupees to bring that in." They looked at us blankly before telling us they had been charged 200 rupees each, plus 200 rupees for their camera. Someone had pocketed a handy 800 rupees (over €13) from them. "Where is he?", we asked, before marching over and confronting him. We knew even before speaking to him that he wasnīt the sharpest tool in ...
On the train to Goa, India byrnedm... delicious poha with shredded coconut breakfast we stick with our earlier decision to skip a daytrip...better to relax at home, spend time with all, and prep the talks. Nikhil arrives at 10 and over a cup of chai the topic is brought upon again. Not mandu but somewhere in the ghats perhaps closer. Options emerge to the left and right of Indore.. and in the middle of deciding, Nikhil says "arre yaar, all these places will take a couple hours anyway, so why not go a little extra ...
Indore, India martessAfter 2 weeks in Bangalore, 33 hours away I reach Ujjain, home town of one of my Indian friends who is about to get married. It's a lot of fun, ceremonies, lots of dancing, good food, colourful saris and lengas and after four days he is happily married and I have a lot of pictures and good memories to bring home. And after all, still two more weeks to go.
Ujjain, India simplykrissi... fight but we are more determined than he is. He probably realises that we are prepared to get physical over this and he eventually backs off. People are always trying to go straight to the front and do so quite brazenly. More surprising is how the other people in the line don't seem to care at all. It is left to us foreigners to stand up for what's right. Another hour of standing brings us to the front of the line. Almost inevitably, we are ...
