... called Pierrefonds, at the far side of the Foret de Compiegne, about a half hour drive from here. We wanted to go see it, so we stopped in at the Tourist Office to see if there was a bus. Nope, no bus. But one of the people called a friend who does some private driving for occasions (like weddings, I suspect - he drives a nice Mercedes). ... we had in town as it was the crews day off, back on the boat now, it is 9.30pm and so tranquil here the birds are singing in the trees beside the canal and the town is far enough away not to bother us.... ... front, really strong winds and lightning. Eventually it eased enough to proceed but started again soon and we were thoroughly drenched by the time we reached the barge in Peronne. Back on the barge to dry out, the storms kept passing over us for the next 2 hours, fantastic dinner again, fish croquets with herb dressing and Belgian French fries and tasty beef stew, with a fresh green salad, amazing flavours.
