We drive into the wind and the August sandstorms on the flat Free Sate plains make the petrol intake of the van even higher. We beat our previous record and paid R 1872 for a tank of petrol!

Adrienne and I left Jo'burg after breakfast for Bloemfontein. On the way out we saw, I am sure, hundreds of motor bikes passing on the opposite side of the motorway - we wondered what that was all about! They even had a police 'escort'.
