Travel back in time by visiting ancester houses

A two-days trip with Charles to Taichung, Taichung County, Changhua, Changhua County and Nantou. It has been a very interesting and, diversified and pleasant trip, during which I learned a lot about Taiwan's history, architecture, industry( history ), family trees and present life and communication.

The trip was tightly packed and covered:
- Taichung Modern Arts Museum
- Rice fields

Decision 08

... to keep the town safe and social. This evening, as I was putting on my helmet to scoot back to my apartment, a man approached me with a rather interesting proposal. He spoke English quite fluently and explained that he as on the town board and asked if I would be interested in getting involved in local government. My ears perked up as I asked him some questions about what they do and where they meet. He said that there was a meeting going on in the ...

Beach Day!

... Bella, the Chinese teacher who is very light weight, got stuck half-way down the wire and needed to be pulled down by one of the guides waiting at the bottom. We all thought nothing of the situation until Joe, another staff member, zipped down and came to a complete and sudden stop after his rope came to a rust-spot on the wire, causing his body to whip forward and put severe strain on his arms. What made the situation even more humorous was ...

Changhua and Lugang

A few of us "newbies" decided that we needed a little weekend getaway this weekend. So, we packed our bags, hopped on our mopeds, and hit the streets on a small day trip to a few local towns. Our first stop was the city of Changhua. It is about a forty-five minute scooter ride away from our home city of Taichung. Although the pain in your rear-end that comes with riding a moped for that length of time is not a lot of fun, it was nice to get out on the open roads and ...

My Third Graders

The third graders that I am teaching are a much different group than the second graders that I had for the first two days of school. They are much older and their behavior is a little bit better, but at the same time, they are still 8 year olds who can be quite mischevious. My third grade class consists of five students: Charlie, Brian, Kenneth, Arthur, and Sharon. They are all quite bright and, like the second graders, have strong personalities which make ...

... usual costs of getting set up in a place are rapidly paid back when the money just starts flooding in. - The country. The new hispeed rail opened up and made everything so easy to get to. Even without the rail the luxury buses were always fun to take to Taipei. Kenting beach is a bit further to get to but worth the adventure, especially in the first weekend of April when it hosts a massive music festival. There was always a ...

Museums and Bikes

... distance and biggest ride of their lives. The bike trail took us through a variety of places that included the canal, a small grove of trees, and across a railroad track. We rode about four miles total- two miles each direction. We stopped half way for some lunch. Although a number of kids got tired on the way back and cried that they did not want to pedal anymore, most of them really enjoyed themselves and were extremely tired at the ...

The Fourth of July

... our nation's birthday, yet, I was in a land where I felt sort of alone. It felt like I was attending a party where I was the only person that showed up. The students at school did not care. It did not phase the people on the streets. It barely made the CNN Global News as a small mention in their news ticker. The headline read, simply, "USA Celebrates 4th." However, once I got to school and was working in the office, I felt it was my national ...

Travel through Taiwan

Christmas in Taiwan

... The scenery in Taiwan is absolutely breathtaking, as the conditions are perfect for palm trees and other tropical plants, which are everywhere. The buildings are slightly more run-down than in Chuncheon, and more of them are abandoned. In fact, across from the house where we were staying was an abandoned school that was really fun to explore. The strange thing about it was that it wasn't as if it was closed down and abandoned. It was as if one ...
