So now it is a cool morning amid the clear cut forests of Swaisland. We have been on the tour since the 14th and are surviving. It is a small group, 15 people, of very different backgrounds and interests. That makes it very pleasant. Our tour operator is full of information. Being a little hyperactive I get exhausted just watching him. Our tour started in the Proteo Hotel in Johannesburg. Just a little different than our usual accommodation. A very upscale traveller / business hotel. Where in...
Mbabane, Swaziland marybc... mountains around. No electric, and a good clean ablution block with laundry and washing up facilities. The reception was a good walk away from the camp and there was a small shop selling basic supplies and firewood too. There are loads of walking trails to viewpoints, picnic sites and the falls, together with game and bird viewing. When we were there we were lucky to see some lovely flowers in bloom. There were also cabins to ...
Malalotja Swaziland, Swaziland neilandchris... Back at camp we had an early lunch and then an early dinner as we had seen the build up of clouds around the mountains. We managed to cook dinner on the open fire before the rain started. With it there was thunder and lightening, quite a spectacle. During the rain a large group of motorhomes turned up just as it was turning dark and they took up most of the camp. It rained heavy in the night but the storm passed ...
Mlilwane Swaziland, Swaziland neilandchris... it as an example of what South Africa is capable of. That means there aren’t many blacks there.

Me, I just look for a Wimpy’s, of burger fame. They’ve got the best espresso in the country, at better than usual prices. Sometimes you can even score a double for the price of a single. That doesn’t speak for their ketchup, though. In general S.A. ketchup is not very good. They don’t even call it ...
Mbabane, Swaziland hardiek... the village and learned more about Swazi culture. A swazi man could marry as many women as he wanted as long as he could afford it. A virgin bride was worth 17 cows. The men married at about 30 while women married at 18. There were many more interesting facts. We also learned more about the King of Swaziland who can marry as much as he likes. The last King had 100 wives and 600 children. The next King is chosen under the following rules...He must be the youngest of the Kings ...
Swaziland, Swaziland alandrach... the camp, past the beehive huts that cost a pittance to stay the night, and I continued shooting photos.

One of the highlights at the rest camp was a group of friendly Swazi school kids on a field trip, and they loved posing for photos and seeing the results on our digital cameras. Whenever I shot a photo they shouted “Yea!”, and some of my nicest photos were of Jeff and Marina surrounded by smiling children.

I was happy to hear that Kyle ...
Ezulwini, Swaziland mebinerWe now continue our move south to Swaziland, which is a mountainous country made up of mostly farming and some parks and local crafts. The capital was like many capitals in small countries not much to see of interest, you need to move to the countryside.
Mbabane, Hhohho, Swaziland goodrichodyssey... happy. I am glad everyone enjoyed it and we were all able to chill together and I was quite relieved that all went well. I picked up some spices when I went to South Africa along with some here so I was all set. I have always been hesitant to throw parties b/c I didn't think I could cook for many people, but now I feel like I can do it!! Plus I didn't rely on my old standby, Sambar, i tried to cook different things!!.... Well that was my weekend.....
Mbabane, Swaziland sumeeth1... the kid home, he came back 1 month later and died. I also saw countless kids with malnutrition and severe infections from that. Oh and i forgot an extra patient.... Patient 5: Twins. One child is hospitalized and extremely sick. The child basically does not even look human. Is completely emaciated and has severe AIDS. The grandmother is in the hospital with the child. The child had been seen in our clinic a while back and got an AIDs test....which just came back positive. Except ...
Mbabane, Swaziland sumeeth1... back tails between our legs to the first place and in fairness it wasn't bad. We had a nice dinner and the breakfast was something else. We got up in the morning and had cereal and toast and what have you and then they brought out the real breakfast so we were seriously stuffed. We stayed there for two nights and on the second morning for the first and last time ever I had chicken cordon bleu for breakfast. Some things stay ...
