After we left the monastery we retraced our steps and stopped at Asenovgrad Fortress, which perches dramatically in the mountains about 2km from the town. ... atmospheric. I loved the frescoes on the ceiling and pillars of the long archway just in front of the main entrance. It was lovely to wander round the grounds in the sun, too. There was a sheep in a pen for some reason and cockerels and hens wandered round the edge of the main courtyard. I seemed to be one of very few international tourists there; mostly it seemed to be Bulgarians popping into the church to pray ...

... on, until I had a nasty fall, I hit ice, lost control, and bounced off a 6"6 Romanian guy and then tumbled another 10metres downhill. Hurt and winded I got back in my skiis, though for rest of that day my mojo was definitely gone, confidence just wasn't the same. Next morning however I was back in form. Although very sore still ! ... impressive gorge, turning off to climb the winding road in to the Rhodopi mountains which border Bulgaria. There are 25 or so Pomak villages scattered around this range, inhabited by Muslims speaking Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish. We look out for a place to park for the night, eventually we came to a small church sat on top of a small hill, we pulled around the back of the hill onto a track.
